Strange Crawl revelations.

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Strange Crawl revelations.

I just had a strange revelation. Books contain knowledge. Knowledge equals power. And power corrupts.
It seems like Sif Muna must be the Evil Overlord ruling over all the gods and the dungeon of Zot.
Have you had any revelations like this playing Crawl late at night?
What made you happy today?

Re: Strange Crawl revelations.

What distinguishes the "good" gods from any other gods seems to be the ability to cooperate with each other, since they're the only ones that don't mind if you switch between them.

But... if "goodness" is defined by the ability to cooperate, then all monsters are good, because they cooperate with each other to kill the player.

A crawlosopher on the wiki has contemplated this issue and come to the same conclusion: the monsters are good, the player is evil. http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?t ... .27Evil.27

Books corrupt, so Lugonu should gift it, not Sif?

By the same token, if you worship Ashenzari you're helping them become the most evil god.

The player being evil is perhaps the simplest explanation of why every single thing you encounter tries to kill you. They know you're a sociopathic mass murder invading their home.

Re: Strange Crawl revelations.

Maybe it is the Orb after all?
And pacifying the enemies just involves freeing them from the chant of the Orb?

Re: Strange Crawl revelations.

I've been assuming that the Orb is an ancient evil artefact or being, like the One Ring or Jordan's Dark One, sealed away for all time with the key shattered and scattered across the Hells and Dungeon alike. The monsters are guarding that key to prevent the cataclysm unleashed when you free the Orb. For whatever reason (will vary by character and/or the god followed), the player is seeking this item.

Re: Strange Crawl revelations.

The Dungeon is Aperture Laboratories.

Goes underground hideously deep? Check.

There's a hand-held portal device? Check. (Passage of Golubria.)

You're trying to retrieve a spherical object and escape with it? (Or, in past tournaments, incinerate it for a banner.) Check.

In certain places, you'll hear semi-sane ramblings from one of the noted inhabitants? Check. (Crazy Yiuf is Cave Johnson?)

Incur the wrath of one of the unseen overlords of the place, and they'll engage in aggressively passive-aggressive attempts to hamper your progress? Check. (Witty banter, not so much.)

I used to want you dead, but now I only want you gone...
You fall off the wall. You have a feeling of ineptitude.

Re: Strange Crawl revelations.

Gonna go all Jacobs ladder up in here. You are really lying in a coma somewhere and the dungeon, orb and the gods are all just creations your mind made up to deal with your internal demons. The orb is the sweet release of death while everything else is there to keep you torturing yourself mentally over all the bad decisions you made in your life. 420.
