Back to basics

Ok the topic name doesn't give a fucking clue, I know.

I got this urge to go back to the humble beginnings of DC:SS and play (AND WIN!) every stable release since 0.1.7 and up to 0.9.2 (i've won a 0.10 and 0.11 game so far only :P ) at least once (and see the races/backgrounds that have been removed :P )... That means the latest updates to each release, so for example, I'm going to play 3.4, 4.5, 5.2 etc.

Re: Back to basics

0.1.7 is kicking my ass (it's only ascii too and some key binds are different and it's hard to get used to both since I'm a tiles-only player) so this is bound to take a whole lot of time to achieve...

If you want to go back to basics, play Crawl 4.1 on CDO. >:D

Re: Back to basics

Ummmm just 0.10 and 0.11 Haven't really been at it. 0.1.7 was quite disheartening. :P

P.S: I might give it a go when I'm feeling like it. Kinda busy with real life issues.

Re: Back to basics

You should probably go backwards from 0.9. That way there's not one sudden jump into the past, and it's a more gradual transition.
You see here a dire elephant corpse.
You start butchering the dire elephant corpse with your claws.
You continue butchering the corpse.
You are engulfed in roaring flames. You stop butchering the corpse.
You die...

I might actually try doing that myself.

Re: Back to basics

Well, you still run into situations where the game gets much harder - I'm thinking of the .5 to .6 to .7 transition where heavy armour when from unstoppable to unwearable to OK. That's going to be tough no matter which direction you go.

Re: Back to basics

0.7 should be really easy actually. Robes can still be enchanted highly and MfCr has Berserker Rage and old Haste in a book. Same goes for 0.6. And in 0.5 MDFi is a big laugh, or so I've heard. I've only played .6-.11, and Ancient.

I'd love to see your take on MDFi.

Honestly, the big thing keeping me from playing old versions is the need to dance XP. It was OK at the time, but I went back and played a .5.2 game around the time when .8 came out and it was nearly unbearable.
