Worst floors

Alright, this is for those levels that seem to have every unique and OOD creature in it. Today I had the worst one I've had in my short crawl career. D10 had a 7 headed hydra at one stairs, Josephine at another stair and a hill giant at the other. It also had Grum and his wardog pack, and erica floating around. I did ok though, hit orc for a bit, went back and stair danced going through like 3 or 4 permafood from casting meph clouds left and right. Eventually went down a stair and the hydra was right there, killed me before my teleport went off. None of them are really horrible at that level besides the hydra, but all of them at an early level like D10 was a pain in the rectum.

Re: Worst floors

I think this thread would be more appropriate in CYC; this section is more for individual characters.

Anyway, I had a floor around that level much like the one you described; it was one of those nasty hexagon (or octagon, I don't remember which) levels with all the stairs grouped at the center of the floor. I went down the stairs and was confronted with monsters all around, including a hydra and some other nasties. I went back up, came down an escape hatch, and was in about the same situation. So I teleported around into nasty situation after nasty situation (lots and lots of uniques -- Gastronok, Joseph, Erica, Josephine, a couple others) before finally finding the downstairs and making a break for them with a hydra on my tail.

Oh, and I was like xl4 and diving to the bottom of the dungeon as a vpar. So I never had to deal with them again.

Re: Worst floors

Mennas, Mara and Khufu with his greater mummy escorts all together near the stairs on Crypt:1 was pretty scary.

Also had a level in my current game where I went down into a Vault:8 style ambush on Vault:5, except with stone, fire and frost giants instead of vault guards. (OK, there weren't as many of them, but they were pretty dangerous nevertheless.)

Re: Worst floors

--Both Mara and Mennas on Snake:5

--D:6, lots of trolls and oklobs.

--Orc:3, with Grum, Nergalle, and Gastronok all camping the stairs.

--Lair:2 with death yaks

--Swamp:1 with Joseph, Josephine, and several hydrae camping the stairs. At this point I decided "Umm, no. I'm doing Snake instead."

I just ran into the toughest non-branch level I've seen so far, on D:11. It is a wide-open level with no corridors and has pools containing electric eels scattered around. There is <something> in the middle protected by 4 skeletal warriors, plus it has Erica, Joseph, and Urug with javelins, plus several packs of orcs and orc priests. I stair-danced for a bit to get to some crystal plate armor stashed near the middle, but I think I'm going to wait and come back once I have a better weapon (only have a +1 falchion right now).

Yeah, you'd think there'd be some sort of conflict of interest there, but no.

Re: Worst floors

ORC: THREE!
Yes, I typed in captials because I was downright enraged.

All along (and after playing around on other characters on wizard mode), I get told "stay away form Orc 4! It's dangerous!".

I cleared the only area of Orc: 4 I could... Then discovered a brand new staircase to Orc: 3.

It... it was extremely depressing.
Orc: 4 was just more normal Orcs, wizards/priests/warriors/warlords/orges/wargs.
Oh and a hill giant or troll? Whatever it was, all died nicely to a fireball.

Orc: 3 on the otherhand... Very simple. I go up to the new upwards staircase. Oh... just one hill giant? Hmm, okay then... Fireball! HAHA I WIN! I rest for mana, suddenly see 6 orcs including two orc priests and two wizards and I decide to fireball them (I was way, way too far to try to make an escape) I got both priests and a wizard, so all good.
Then I see a lovely freakin' giant, I fireball that, along with killing the second wizard and two normal orcs, so I was fine.
Giant runs off, I slowly make my way to the downstairs and am ambushed by (what I guess) was a 20% hillgiant from around a freakin' corner.

THAT and THAT ALONE is why Orc: 3 is evil.

First monster I encounter on D14: an ancient lich.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

I just had an invis horror on D:8. That seems out of order.

Re: Worst floors

On the subject of OOD dudes (from the LearnDB):

8 is a marker for extremely out of depth monsters in vaults; both traditional and valued by most devs. Good results: d:4 unseen horrors, d:5 centaur warriors, d:6 fire crabs, d:9 sphinxes, d:10 fire giants, d:11 lichs, d:14 ancient liches.

Fortunately, they're being looked at right now.

Re: Worst floors

I hope they're removed asap. A D:6 fire crab is incorrect, and against the spirit of the game.

fire crabs only happen if you're not careful about who you're with.

The only way that I've seen to check if they happened is to see if they've killed anyone, and fire crabs tend to be less deadly than things like unseen horrors and centaur warriors. It's possible that some have spawned and been avoided by players more intelligent than the ones on footv.

They show up a lot on the trailer park branch.
