Make iguanas drop hides so you can enchant them into hats, and make baby alligators drop hides for you to enchant into leather shoes.
This is my number one feature request for .11

Make crafting a skill so that various animal bits can be turned into items and sold in shops and bazaars. Sheepskin coats, snakeskin shoes, koboldskin gloves... the higher your skill, the better the price you'll get!

On a related topic, given the Crawl shopkeepers sell but don't buy, where do they get their merchandise from?
Furthermore: are the non-consumables secondhand or new?

Answer to the first question. They take them off dead adventurers.
Answer to the second question. It depends on weather they are an antique shop or not. Antique shops stock secondhand weapons, regular shops stock new weapons made in multi-species sweatshops.

This would open up a new strategy: camp on D:4 and sell items you craft for big $$$. When you need more raw materials, hire orcs or someone to harvest some for you. Eventually you will have enough money to hire a squad of tough monsters who will retrieve the orb for you.

We're...we're PATSIES. That explains why there's no victory screen: when you emerge into the sunlight you are immediately surrounded by a gang of gods swinging blackjacks. Then it's thunk on your noggin, and when you wake up three hours later the Orb is GONE.

The blue potion is the window cleaner that Merv Griffin injected into all the people who disappeared from the elevator so their brains would die last and be suitable subjects for the jars in the first place.

Always confused, but starts with unarmed of 27. Since you're a brain in a vat, you only get the starting hat.
