Thread of Unnecessaries

:) Simply opinions open for friendly debate! Which species, backgrounds, spells, etc. do you think have no significant reason or difference to be in the game?

Examples.

Species

Halfling: A human with more limits & random ranged skills that other species can do similarly well.
Centaur: A faster, tougher high elf, except worse at everything else.

Backgrounds

Chaos Knight
Death Knight
Healer
^can just grab a more focused background and join these Gods in the early game anyways.

Faster is important enough that centaurs deserve to stay.

Smaller should be made more important so halflings will be more different.

The religious backgrounds you mention could be removed without annoying me much, but it is nice to be able to start with a god and figure out how to use it if you've never used that one before. The ones that have backgrounds are some of the most straightforward, so they aren't bad choices.

I think the classes that start with a deity should just be condensed into one class titled 'Zealot' and lets the player pick from a semi-restricted list to worship. The selected deity would alter the equipment at the start of the adventure.
It is all fun and games until Xom tosses you into the Abyss.

Re: Thread of Unnecessaries

I think the new races being considered in 0.13 are in danger of obsoleting some older ones. Lava Orcs almost completely dominate Hill Orcs, and Gargoyles IMO are better than Ghouls in Ghoul's best niche.

Of the existing races, High Elves and Tengu seem too similar (combine them into a new High Tengu race?) and ditto for Kobolds and Halflings (Koboldlings?).

Items with bad base types seem destined forever to remain floor junk. Like scale/chain mail, long swords, war axes, halberds, e.g. the stuff that's in between starter equipment and best common 1-hander/2-hander of its class. Then there's weapons like hammers and scythes, which remain in the game only because of their associated uniques (Crazy Yiuf and Sigmund, respectively) it seems.

I kind of think this about Berserkers too -- starting as one somewhat reduces challenge and adaptability in the early game compared to taking a Warrior-type class to Temple with the intention to worship Trog.

We still need Chaos Knights, though. Following Xom from the very beginning presents a unique opportunity for Fun.
