Hint: divide the number of times of mentioned it by the number of posts I've made. In absolute terms, I have mentioned it occasionally at most. And the answer to your question is: why not?

Re: Good computer games?

Since you're only 23, you probably missed out on a lot of classic CRPGs. I'd say get a GOG.com account and browse all of the old games, all DRM free. They have most of the Infinity engine D&D games, and there are tons of amazing mods to bring the resolution up to modern standards, widescreen support, even restorations of cut content from the original games.

I'm currently playing through Planescape: Torment with a restoration mod, widescreen/resolution mod, plus a ton of little fix patches. The game looks amazing...

After that, I'll probably dig into Realms of Arkania or Might and Magic VI.

I recently played Waking Mars, and it was fun. It's kind of a dungeon crawl, and requires you to grind a bit. Probably not what you meant when you said grindy dungeon crawl, though. :P

Also pretty well known for an indie game though, it was in some recent bundle.

Cardhalia

Cardhalia is a grid-based dungeon game we created quite a long time ago now. As the game was very successful in those times in Czech Republic, we were asked to create an English version so it can be played by people who don’t know the Czech language. We decided to proceed this idea and hope that you will appreciate it.

I love how these games are getting "popular" again. I really hope GOG eventually puts all of the old Wizardry games up for download. I think there's still a lot of room for growth with this type of RPG.

Also, TOTALLY obsessed with Deimse - Ascension right now.

Wow, never heard of Darklight Dungeon either, I'll definitely have to keep that one on my radar and check it out later, as I don't really have time for much else right now, Demise is keeping me quite busy.

Could you give me a brief rundown on some of the key features of Darklight Dungeon? Say like, the positive and negative aspects of the game and why it's worth checking out? Thanks again!

Re: Good computer games?

It's a one-man project and has giant persistent dungeon like demise. It's the most 'demise-like' of the indie dungeon crawls that I know of.
But demise is far more evolved. Think Demise like DCSS and DarkLight like maybe Vanilla Angbang.
Demise 'auto'-combat is far better for this kind of gameplay than DarkLight turn-based. Demise has also far more 'stuff' (monsters, items etc.)
But for what it is DarkLight is a pretty impressive game nontheless.

Here is a 'Oubliette' fan-page (kind the 'Rogue' for this sub-genre):

You've been a wealth of information on this subject, thanks! Totally nerding out over these games right now. I think I'll hold off on DarkLight for now, though I love the short plot synopsis I read for it. Very dark and satanic. I think it needs to develop a bit more before I plunge into it, in the meantime I'll waste my life with Demise :)

That series is another hardcore classic. The best when it's comes to a true pen&paper system simulated on computer. One could actually call it a 'CRPS' - 'Computer Role Playing Simulation'.
Also the new Drakensang games are worth a look.

Sort of but it's not procedurally generated. It's an old-school platformer where you have to get the patterns exactly right all the time. The first jump alone has insanely tight tolerance.

Laos Quest is an evolved Rick Dangerous. (THE archetypal 'try&error'-Jump&Run with an "Indiana Jones"-theme -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Dangerous)
Spelunky is Rick Dangerous (more or less...) - transformed into a 'roguelike' .

PoE looks ridiculously amazing, especially for an indie and free-to-play game. Sort of looks like Diablo III but actually good, and made by devs who care. Installing the open beta now to check it out...

Speaking of Diablo III, have you guys seen all of the drama that unfolded over the past week or so? The game director, Jay Wilson aka laughingstock of the internet, stepped down in disgrace and moved on to "greener pastures" within the company. Normally, I wouldn't take such glee in watching someone fail so miserably, but the arrogant douchebag ruined something that could've been beautiful. As long as it takes Blizzard to release Diablo games, I'll probably be dead before the next one arrives, so DIII might have been my last chance to enjoy a new, fresh Diablo game :(

I think they should just cease all work on DIII and immediately move on to DIV.

Played some PoE last night, it utterly puts DIII to shame (and would do so even if it cost money). Blizzard deserve every bit of flak they are getting really.

I especially like the massive sprawling passive skill tree, and the gems system. DIII's runes are laughable by comparison.
