Unpleasant OOD Encounters

What are the most nasty, most egregious, and/or weirdest encounters with OOD monsters you've had?

I just had a particularly nasty one: Orc warlord on D:8

Stone giant on D:10 or something. Admittedly, that time I was goofing around on the level long enough to trigger super-OODs.

D:2 centaur. I'm not sure if that is actually OOD but a D:2 centaur is as lethal as a OOD monster. I've had a D:4 orc warrior spawn because I had triggered the OOD timer.

Re: Unpleasant OOD Encounters

My most memorable OOD spawns were a D:1 giant frog, a D:2 orc warrior, and a D:4 wyvern. None of them came from staying past the OOD trigger. Each of them led to painful death because I am dum.

EDIT: evilmike's post reminded me that I once got a D:8 centaur warrior. I beat it.

Re: Unpleasant OOD Encounters

I find centaur warriors to be the deadliest OOD enemies when you're pre-lair.

Of course, on d:13 they aren't OOD at all, and you can get lair that deep. Still nastier than anything else though. At least you can run away from a stone giant!

The only thing that might really compete with a centaur warrior is a sphinx (again due to speed), but these are VERY uncommon early on, even in vaults.

I've twice seen a troll on D:1, but I think they generated as part of some kind of vault and not by regular monster generation.

D:1 Centaur is even more unpleasant. This happened a few days ago in 0.8. I tried to ask in another thread how this was possible, but no responses so far. I guess a D:2 centaur used stairs.

I had a game this week with an orc warrior and two centaurs on D2. I ran from the orc warrior and defeated the centaurs, then went back to die to the orc.

I once stepped into the dungeon and had an ogre on my screen at the start of the game. I'm pretty sure that one was less than 20 turns to death.

Re: Unpleasant OOD Encounters

I had a fire giant on D8 once. Totally my fault, only time I'm certain I triggered the OOD timer. Lair and Orc were both on that level and it took me way too long to clear. Luckily it went to sleep in a dead end corridor, although it was dangerously close to the Lair. I was able to creep safely by for most of the game until I finally got tough enough to kill it.

I don't think I've had anything too awful that was the game's fault. The odd D2 centaur I guess. And I seem recall some yaktaurs around D10ish once.

Had a death yak as part of the troop guarding the lair entrance on D8 or so. Avoided it once and snuck by but ran out of options and tried to dash to the lair and it chased me down pretty easy. Hill giants seem to turn up fairly often but I can usually get away from them.

After a string of early, unavoidable deaths, I ran into a D:2 Ogre. I said "Screw it" and decided to die in melee with it. I killed it.

I also once had a D1 Hill Giant Zombie. My MuSu couldn't spammal it to death, so I ran.

D:2 Centaur is probably the nastiest of the lot depending on bow/arrow enchantments/egos (although by that time I'm lvl 3 on most characters so if i'm lucky I can kill it by closing in fast enough. Stealthy characters can be lucky and even afford a stab.

Once got Nessos around D:12 near a Lair entrance in a Cross-shaped level with glass walls and lava all around. Poison arrows/flame arrows hurt -_- And he keeps blinking. My Cheibriados worshippers love killing him with Slouch though. :P

Playing near-trunk deployment.

D6 has more than one Unseen Horror. D6. Way too early, and this was near-immediate; there was no OOD delay involvement.

Most out of depth I think was back in 0.8. Entire band of d:5 deep trolls, on a FeWa^Neme. Spent waaay too long clearing out an entire floor gnoll camp, and tripped the OOD timer.

Drowned 'em all with meph though. I was disappointed I only leveled once. :)

A more recent example, on a SpSt

  Code:
10777 | D:8      | Found a flagged portal.
10787 | bailey   | Entered the bailey
10820 | bailey   | wtf, why is this bailey full of deep elves

Yeah... D:8 deep elf bands with casters. I bailed on that fast.

Is there an easy way to tell the approximate depth required for a monster to spawn? Is it a formula based on hit dice or something? Having played for a while, I have a general sense of what appears where, but it would be nice if there were a way to tell for sure that something can only spawn if you trip the OOD timer.

There are lists that describe the normal depth of a monster, it isn't linked to HD. Consider boggarts - very low HD but never spawning on D:2.
This is from learndb: The maximum possible is a 9 level difference, or 5 on D:1; add 12 as a special farmer penalty which only triggers after ~1k turns and is quite rare even then. Other times when something seems overly powerful, it's just a vault -- e.g. death yak guarding the lair.

Some of the posters here are describing vaults and not OOD monsters.

I have no idea what their native depth is, but an early electric eel (or two or three) can be very dangerous.

Monster placement code is unpleasant and confusing but it lives in mon-place.cc, and mon-pick.cc contains the lists of depths and rarities if you feel like trying to decipher them (you'd have to ask a more experienced dev than me to explain how it actually works :P).

Mon-pick! Thanks Marvin. I was trying to navigate my way through the placement code, but this is a lot more useful.

Btw, I'm almost done with the high score menu (I had to take a break because a lack of free time). I noticed that someone else posted in the wiki that they're also working on it. Is there any reason I shouldn't just submit my patch when I'm done?

I found a cyclops on D:6 as a kobold berserker so I decided to use one of my teleport scrolls. It brought me a few tiles above it, where there happened to be three orc wizards, a goliath beetle, and an orc priest. I decided to use another teleport scroll, but this one was even worse and decided to spawn me right next to the cyclops. I then used my third and final scroll and made it away.

I later died to a grizzly bear on D:10.

I've encountered him in the past as early as D3.

AFAIK, uniques cannot be OOD, as there is a pre-determined range of levels on which they can be generated, and they cannot appear any earlier.

There is a vault that can appear in depths around the Vaults (possibly exclusively in the Vaults themselves?) that can feature Sigmund and Ijyb, though, which is pretty amusing when it does happen.

I'm on D3 in a near-trunk build (0.11-a0-1279).

Not even close to OOD timeout.

There is an iguana and a wyvern.

A WYVERN.

Did something change? What the heck? I've never seen one this early.

Don't want to submit this as a bug unless it actually is one.

Probably going to see someone post a commit reference that shows depths were changed and this is correct.

Also check out the horrible entry vault on D1. ORBS OF FIRE? No access to the primary three exits without DIG? Forced onto D2 (not so bad)?

I think all the entry vaults that appear sealed in have a secret door someplace. I think.

And I like the zoo entries where you can see some horribly OOD monsters but can't interact with them, especially that kraken one.
