I like to think of the staircases to Shoals/Swamp as stable portals to elsewhere in the world (they don't get closed when you grab the Orb because they don't lead to other planes). Game logic FTW!

I wonder why an octopode can put 8 rings while any other race can only two, since they have 10 fingers...

The standard fantasy magic field around the ring explanation works... IF you don't put much other thought into it.

The magic on the ring that allows anything from a spriggan to an ogre to wear it only works with the ring finger.

Of course not. The kind of people who go into dungeons and beat up monsters are civilized and do not approve of such barbaric concepts.

You forgot to mention eating raw meat with their bare hands and drinking random liquids out of unlabeled bottles. But at least most of them take time out for reading books, even if they just look at the table of contents to see if it's interesting.

Oh wait...reading a spellbook to see what's in it takes no game time. Disregard that.

I asked it once but this realy bugs me:
Why is the Pandemonium protecting the Orb of Zot?

P.S. Serious question here.

Well, we don't really know what the heck the Orb of Zot is *for* maybe when exposed to sunlight it gives one the ability to channel or control the forces of pandemonium, that'd piss 'em off enough that they'd go after ya, don't you think?

How does the Orb of Zot keep regenerating anyway? Tons of adventurers have already made off with it, but it still sits there in Zot:5 tempting even more adventurers to try their luck...

I like to think that it's like a tooth, when you pluck it out a new one grows in its place (well, some animals' teeth are like that).

Maybe the Orb powers the Pan Lords' HD TVs. They're in an uproar because losing the Orb means waiting a month before they can get their HD fix again.

The Orb is patently a MacGuffin. I don't think there's much more to be said about it.

I will. You go right ahead and maintain your fantasy of the Orb as a capitalist ideological state apparatus designed to prolong the subjugation through hegemony of the orcish workers, etc. See where that gets you.

Grimm wrote:It gets me sweet, sweet revolution. THE ORB IS RED

In standard Marxist thinking a transition from a feudal to a capitalist society is necessary because this step must happen before a socialist state can be formed - but a capitalist society is still part of the problem, not the solution. Thus it is with the Orb: it must exist in order that the revoluion of the workers (orcs) can take place but it is a barrier to, not an enabler of, that inevitable revolutionary change.

And all that is holy is profaned, though that really only happens in the extended endgame.

Re: Great Crawl Mysteries

Correct. I've only ever ascended twice, which makes it a pretty rare occurrence and so whenever I come close I try to finish rather than doing anything else. (Unsurprisingly I've died in Zot a few times, too.)

From the talk on the Tavern one might get the impression that tootling around in extended is the norm but I am certain only a small minority of players ever do that.

If you are referring to theet from sharks, that would mean there are some other Orbs under the actual (in the ground or in whatever the Orb is being stored)

Or it is a part of the Dungeon which is ripped of all the time and it regenerates like the lims of an olm.
But that would mean the Dungeon is a animal/olm and lives. That would explain why the Dungeon seems to hate you.

Whereas I have passed up ascension a number of times in order to, as you say, tootle in the endgame. I want to see ALL the content.
