Pardon me, but what is a bailey? Are those new in trunk?

God no. Bailey's just a place with a bunch of orcs (generally) and some loot. Various portals fall under the 'bailey' logo.

Nah, they've been around a while.

A bailey is a portal vault, like a sewer or ossuary. Often filled orcs, kolbolds or gnolls, they come themed either around axes (lots of returning) or polearms (lots of reaching). A few versions have awesome piles of stat increase potions as loot.

Edit: ninja-ed. :p

Still wondering what the word means, so checking Wikipedia:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motte-and-bailey:

A bailey is an enclosed courtyard overlooked by the motte and typically surrounded by a wooden fence called a palisade. It was usually used as a living area by servants of the castle's lord. Also located inside the bailey would be a blacksmith, a miller, and most of the craftsmen typically required during the medieval period. A castle could have more than one bailey, sometimes an inner and an outer, such as at Warkworth Castle, where expansion of the castle led to enclosure of a new bailey with a wall. Alternatively, the multiple baileys could flank the motte, such as at Windsor Castle. The bailey was often directly connected to the ditch surrounding the motte. The bailey was often enclosed inside another wooden palisade and surrounding ditch to add an extra layer of protection. It was connected to the motte by a timber drawbridge, which could be separated from the bailey as a last defence mechanism. There was in many cases another drawbridge at the entrance into the bailey that could similarly be raised for protection. The bailey would typically contain a hall, stables for the horses and cattle, a chapel, and huts for the nobleman's people. There were often shops inside the bailey for local merchants.

Motte and bailey castles later evolved into Norman castles (also called the keep castle) that evolved later into even better Concentric castles.

The same +8 INT happened to me with a High Elf Paladin. It really is too much isn't it?

It would be if it were reliable and consistent. The RNG screws you over sometimes, so it makes sense that sometimes it would give you sexual favors.

I vaguely remember finding 3 potions of experience in one previously. I would probably prefer if the quantity of the potions were toned down but the frequency increased. Its wierd how you only ever pretty much find 0 of these or 8.

Bailey loot (and hopefully also threat) will be harmonised for 0.8.

I ran into bailey_polearm_5 today, the one that's basically 3 large rooms with hordes of orcs behind each door. Normally, when I've seen this bailey, I've been forced to retreat: mele characters can't hack that many orcs- especially with reaching, and mages don't have anywhere near enough juice to clear it yet, nor is there a safe place to heal.

Today though, I had a brand new randart penetrating crossbow from Trog, a pile of bolts, and a brother in arms to keep the orcs busy while I machine gunned them down.

Overall, I like the baileys. They're fair- you can tell right off the bat if they're too tough, and give you a chance to retreat. Sewers though, you can get halfway in before running into a frog or jelly you're too weak to kill, and too far from the exit to escape.

Worst thing I've had happen in a bailey: drank the eight plus stat potions, and then had the next potion turn out to cure mutation. Now I wait until I've test ID-ed the other potions before downing the all the boosters.

I've certainly encountered this sort of thing with +stat potions. I like baileys, but the loot in some of them can be obscene (or was, I haven't found any huge piles in a while now). The problem isn't so much finding those potions, it's finding gigantic stacks of them. That really shouldn't happen in any loot vault, regardless of difficulty.

I actually try to just identify each type of potion as I find the scrolls for it. Seems to work out okay; sometimes you have to go for a while without wearing an amulet to make sure you aren't wearing Inaccuracy, but aside from that it does pretty well.

I've seen this version three or four times and cleared it exactly once: with Alistair's + clarity. It takes a long time, since you barely stay ahead of the game MP-wise while keeping the orcs drunk long enough for you to heal, but it's an eventual clear as long as you're careful.

I've always wondered... How do you find out the names of vaults and portal vaults in a normal game?

Oh wait, I've seen these. Both times I was a Makhlebite, and Greater Servants did most of the dirty work for me. Actually, it's a sweet spot for an early MfCK - you get a pretty good chance at something like a +3 glaive of reaching. I really came to appreciate reaching weapons in those games.

Reaching weapons are really great with summons.

You can't in game. You have to go to the dat folder, and look up the vault in the text files to see what it's called.

If you die there, you can do !lg . x=map in IRC. But yeah, otherwise you have to check the des files.

The way I do it is to note any alerts - "a black pennant" flies over the bailey I think - and look it up in the wiki or the Goog.

I do the same: save for healing and heal wounds early on, I never quaff-id potions until I've identified mutation and cure mutation.

Oh, and speaking of portals and loot therein: I just got into a wizlab (from Vaults:2) with a bunch of golems.
One of them was a freaking electric golem :|
I had no rElec but with a ton of luck I survived by the skin of my teeth.
The loot? Scrolls :| The best were 2 enchant weapon III :|
Basically all I got out of it was the XP from the electric golem and a big scare.

Worst. Portal. Ever. (no offense to whoever made it, but considering it's basically a suicide mission unless you happen to have rElec, its loot could use a little more bling)

Ran into one with a moat and got turned into a porcupine from all the damn crossboworcs stationed around the place. (and of course i couldn't just go in and take them out, since the water where they were was deep). It was a good character too.

I believe there are escape portals, so there is an alternative to suicide.

It's especially nice as a merfolk of makhleb though, as greater servants can make it a lot easier, and from then on you have a great combination for tough situations: badass demons that you can stand behind with a glaive of reaching.

I worked out a good tactic for that bailey with the orcs on the islands: milk their ammunition. Step into their fire and take it for as long as you can, then step back and heal up. Repeat until they are not shooting any longer - they're out of bolts. Then heal up, sneak by them and kill orcs until you get a polearm of reaching. Then go back and open them all up like tins of beans.

Yeah, I don't like that one. Sometimes it isn't golems. Demons are possible, too. Nothing like being swarmed by tormenting fiends and hellfiring hellions when you're in early Vaults, right?

I've also seen it have potions in each of the little Tombs guarded by the occupant, but like you found with the scrolls they seem to be random potions rather than special potions.

Best I've ever done in that Wizlab, outside of wizard mode, is to stand on the exit portal and shoot demons for xp as they enter line-of-sight.
