My time starts... /now/

I'm going to see if I can go one week, Friday to Friday, 7 days, 168 hours - without playing Crawl.

I don't want sponsorship, but I might need support.
I am sure I played flawflessly. This was an utmost unfair death. -- gorbeh

It'll be hard - but you can do it!

Today is my 16th straight day without playing Crawl.

I propose we start a Crawlaholics Anonymous thread to support people in similar situations.

I actually have to go without Crawl for more or less the whole month. It's NaNoWriMo and I can't get distracted while writing my novel :geek:

Actually, while there's never been a moment when I've gone "GAH RAGEQUIT THE DEVS ARE RUINING THE GAME!!!!!", I've found myself gradually drifting away from Crawl; it's now been more than 4 weeks since I last played, and I haven't particularly missed it.

I expect I'll go back to it at some point - maybe for the next tournament or something.

My Crawl pattern has been this. Play a character or two that gets far, plus however many false starts in between, then go for awhile, a week, two weeks, a month, or so without playing, and then play hard again.

Aaagh. It's only day 2, and I'm struggling.

I must have subliminally hit the key combination that starts Crawl a dozen times already, but I'm too smart for it. I've removed the package.

Joel, if you want to live without Crawl, live without the Crawl dependencies (strategy subforums, watching Webtiles, thinking about your characters, wisely backed-up ~/.crawl).

A generally useful thing to do is to not worry about Crawl at all, and only to come back for a release (not necessarily the next one) or a tournament.

Perhaps you can play some other roguelike to tide you over. Like methadone to Crawl's heroin, except with a more tasteful analogy. Is IVAN still being maintained?

It's worked so far. Just.

I got a little tipsy at the pub and tried to reinstall from apt cache on the train home on Tuesday night, but had updated my package indices so the package manager refused to install an older version. And I realised that when you're trying to hack your package manager to trick it into doing something you've deliberately used it to stop doing, then you kind of have a problem.

The barrier was not insurmountable, but it was sufficient to give me time to come to my senses.

Saved!

For example:
Life: don't smoke, wear a seatbelt.
Crawl: don't use-ID potions, know when to run.

I like that one.

"The knowledge of death is reflective and conceptual, and animals are spared it. They live and they disappear with the same thoughtlessness: a few minutes of fear, a few seconds of anguish, and it is over. But to live a whole lifetime with the fate of death haunting one's dreams and even the most sun-filled days—that's something else." - Ernest Becker, The Denial of Death.
