In current trunk, someone has implemented something very much resembling the Nethack Castle as a Zot entry vault.

This amuses me greatly.

Ha, cool!

I had never run into it before (but then I've also only ever seen the Lernaean Hydra once despite many visits to the place where it can occur, so I guess the game has a lot of stuff I haven't seen yet. This is a Good Thing).

The first time I ever battled Tiamat, I dealt 150~ damage in one shot using scythe of curses. I didn't think that was possible, but one turn he was at full hp, the next he was in the red. I suppose I was probably maxing out on damage though, since my strength and dex were both at around 40~, but still! I read about tiamat long before ever meeting him, and to have him be killed so quickly was hilarious. At first I thought maybe something evoked torment, since I was a lich and wouldn't be effected by it, but after rereading the messages, it was definitely from the scythe.

It would be interesting to know the maximum damage one could deal in a single sit using a weapon attack. My guess would probably be against an imp using a GSC of holy wrath at 72 strength and at 27 skill with maces and fighting(although I don't know if fighting effects damage or not).

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the most damage you can deal with a spell is around 340(bolt of innacuracy at max power).

A GSC is a strongest melee weapon, so obviously you can't get a better damage than from a +9 GSC of HW and stats you mentioned, unless there are some super strong artifact that I don't know of. And a potion of might will ad 1d10 IIRC. Also there are slaying bonuses from rings and +Dam. But I wonder what is the maximum melee damage really. Coincidentally, I'm playing an OgFi atm and have a +6 GSC of crushing, it's pretty good.

errr yeah, sorry, why not a berserker/hunter? I thought the appeal of a Fi was the wide open god choice(and I would usually prefer hunter in the case of an ogre) and the shield(which you wouldn't be using because GSC)?

It didn't really matter as I just wanted to do some bashing with a GSC. Now I have haste, oka gifts and finesse and some rocks to throw, throwing crosstrains with slings, too. So berserking is not needed so much. I also have an amulet of rage just in case. BiA is not for me as I don't like to rely on summons. If I'm lucky I might something like a GDA or maybe some good eveningstar, so I could use a shield. I might die to the fist stone giant I meet, though... Sorry for off-topicing, but I hope CYC is not so strict.

Don't know if this counts as an odd thing, but I found the Elf treasure rooms, blocked on all sides by undiggable walls, as is proper... But the only egress was blocked by deep water!

Makes doing Elf: 3 even LESS of a payoff if you don't have ctele or flight (I had to come back later).

Indeed. Upon checking my mutations afterwards, there was nothing new. Kind of a shame, but it isn't unreasonable. Potions of mutation are risky business.

I'm pretty sure you cannot actually GET bolt of inaccuracy to max power, or even close to it. Same thing as with any of the rod evocations, even at 27 evoc you aren't going to hit it, and there's no other way to increase power.

Highest single and over time damage from PC is might + finesse + dragon form, then go berserk, as far as I know. [EDIT: You are talking something like 3000 damage, there are some damage tables snow compiled a while ago that are stickied on the Dungeon Crawl Advice forum, I believe.]

As for Scythe of Curses, it can inflict necromancy miscasts on hit (hence the name), must have hit Tiamat with a nasty dose of draining on top of your melee damage. (The draining from the necro miscast would be independent of your damage, not proportional to it like the brand. So what you did was probably like getting a good hit in with the weapon AND casting a very high level bolt of draining on her at the same time, which definitely could do damage a good deal above 100 even to Tiamat.)

Until the vault got fixed, occasionally, a teleport trap could be generated in the angel's little niche, which occasionally meant an angel wandering around, like, D:6.
