I used to play Crawl before it was Crawl (AKA original Linley's). Got to zot (5?) with a troll berserker, never won.

It was still called Crawl, though.

Indeed it was, but it wasn't Crawl as we know it now. Although, maybe "as we know it now" is a worse way of knowing Crawl since Trog haste + amulet of resist slowing have wrongly been removed from the game since.

I haven't been playing Crawl as long as you (only since 0.5) but, though people sometimes lament elements that have been removed (I'm looking at you, Mountain Dwarves), my impression is that some of the more random/ annoying/ pointless things have been removed (like victory dancing). Whether this makes the game "better" is, of course, moot.

Re: Had to ask..

When I first won Crawl, only one rune was needed for Zot and on Zot:5 you could control-tele to the Orb and back. No notable opposition during the ascension either.

When I first won, back in the day, you would go down the stairs into D1 and an ancient lich would kneel before you, proffering the Orb on a velvet cushion.

Well, that ranting above actually was supposed to be a joke since since amulet of resist slowing made trog berserk kinda silly -so silly that even a shit player like I was back in the day was able to get to zot ;). I definitely think that the game has improved a lot.

When I first won, way back before this era, Linley Henzell would personally telephone each winner and regale him (there were no female players back then) with a hearty Australian anecdote, full of vim and cheek.

When I first won, back at the dawn of time, only Linley Henzell and I existed and we occupied the same physical space (because there was no other space back then, you see). Of course Linley hadn't even conceived of the game at that point but he knew a winner when he saw one so he clapped me on the back and shook me by the hand as a means of congratulations.

Yup. That's why you, like Linley, are the creator of a wildly popular Roguelike that remains in active development years after you first designed it... right?

I mean a joke word which was derived from Communism (which didn't work) and referring to the "[Crawl]community" mentioned by Grimm, and also (indirectly) referring to those nasty arguments people have had in these forums therefore trying to pose the question if the future of the Crawl Tavern (i.e. Communenism in practise) would be the same as communist countries (failure) in a humoristic, tongue-in-cheek way.

But now my beautiful word is ruined. RIP Communenism.

Back when the Tavern opened, you could get an actual drink here. You pm'ed one of the mods and they sent you a gift certificate for one of your local bars.

But then heavy-handed mods started moving stuff from GDD to CYC because it contravened some supposed social norms, little realising that in doing so they were undoing the very bonds of trust and unity that bound this precious yet fragile little community together...
