New phantom behavior

Full disclosure: I've never liked phantoms. They range from annoying to deadly, and (IMHO) don't bring anything to the game.

That being said, the new (0.27?) behavior, where they blink AND take you with them is incredibly aggravating.

I used to be able to drag them upstairs and park them on a new level. No more - they stick to you (no separation), and when they blink next to you, they take you away from the stair!

Given the early game is already the most dangerous/difficult part, anybody know what's the thinking behind this?

I assume the idea is to make phantoms actually matter, so that you can't just drag them upstairs and park them on a new level.

If they are too deadly now, some rebalancing might happen. (Personally, I can't comment on that, as I play the latest released version (26.1).)

The latest stable release is 27.0; it has been for a while now ^^' .

DCSS 0.27 was released 3 days after my post...

(I still haven't updated since I have a game going on (I don't like to update an ongoing game)).
