I assume this is cheating...

A particularly rich and golden gelatinous thing. Smaller jellies swim and pulse just below its surface, ready to burst forth at the slightest touch.

Speed: 14 | HD: 21 | HP: 230 | AC/EV: 8/4 | Damage: 50(acid:7d3), 30(acid:7d3) | eats items, see invisible, unbreathing | Resistances: magic(180), poison, acid+++, blind, drown | Vulnerabilities: silver | XP: 14176 | Size: Medium | Intelligence: brainless.

The question is, can you do at least 230 melee damage ?

I knew about GMOS but this...

I can't imagine 27 M&F + stealth + dark maul + boots of assassin would fail to OHKO. Vulnerability --> paralysis for tier 1 stab.

If I'm not mistaken a tier 1 stab does + 1100% damage, which on 52 base with +10, vorpal brand, and 30 "short blade stabbing" bonus would let you kill TRJ even at double HP.

Actually unless I'm mistaken even a dagger could do it at 27/27 with paralysis, since that skill by itself will cap you out on pre-multiplier bonus damage using a dagger at most starting dex values. So even ignoring base weapon damage and just factoring the stab bonus, 30 * 1100% is > 230.

It's definitely possible to sleep-stab TRJ, I remember doing it before. I don't really liked it btw because you find yourself surronded by jellies with your fragile stabber...

I wondered if OP wanted stabbing to be part of the question, or pure melee damage...

Edit : it's actually a challenge called "the big one"

Should be quite doable with Dith stealth + Shadow Step.

I'm cool with stabbing... XD That sounds really bad out of context.

FTFY, and yes it does.

Stabs can kill any monster in the game by a comfortable margin.

Yes, if you roll well and the RJ in in the lower end of its HP.

In hellcrawl damage numbers are unobfucscated. As an Op of Chei in Dragon form with a decent amount of slaying I have hit for 210 damage before and RJ supposedly has 150-300. So its easily conceivable to do it.

In DCSS, !!!!!! is 288+ damage, !!!!!!! is 576+ damage. If you play a stabber, you'll get these. The hard part is getting to TRJ without waking it up. Shadow Step is good for this.

Gran finale also works, I tested it out in wizard mode. TRJ was asleep, and after killing it I was surrounded by 19 sleeping jellies.

I have done it once with sleep stabbing, on an spen of dith in 0.15; I didn't even use shadow step, just walked up to it. The weapon was a +7 freezing quickblade, and stealth was probably unreasonably high (ended the game with 27). Here is a tv command with about the right starting point if you want to see:

  Code:
!lg advil game_key=advil:cbro:20140812161532S -tv:<T83091:>T84000:channel=advil

(Not sure I got the end point very close, it may need to be manually cancelled.)

Getting stabs in on the Royal Jelly has become much harder in the last couple versions. The slime vault has been made transparent inside which doubles Royal Jelly wake up chances over the old layout.

Yes, you can definitely see that in the tv I posted, where I really relied on los blocking and would have spent many turns visible to several monsters otherwise. IIRC I have tried to sneak up on it once since and didn't get the rolls, but that's just anecdotal and I have no idea of the actual chances.

Killed it at least twice with one short application of Absolute Zero - but this option didn't exist until quite recently, and it really feels like cheating. Still had to deal with TRJ's spawns in the next move.

I'm assuming this is a incomplete list, since it's only ogres and I would assume that statue form troll claws would do significantly more damage than just a giant spiked club. Unless they all had dark mauls...

Edit: the one in the middle is actually an OP, missed that. But still...

You used to be able to get stab bonuses with Dragon form claws as a Felid, which was also a top-tier level of silly.

I one-shotted him with Absolute Zero during the tourney.
  Code:
102889 | Slime:5  | Noticed the Royal Jelly
102891 | Slime:5  | Killed the Royal Jelly

(Don't know why it took 2 turns. Maybe I took an extra step or something.)
That left my squishy caster with a bunch of jellies to deal with. I hadn't considered that. Had to make a hasty retreat.

It's probably possible to splatter TRJ with the dark maul+boots/hood of the assassin and even just distraction

what did you kill it with here? When I play it generally takes at least 3 firestorms, generally with immolation applied!

Absolute Zero is a new level 9 Ice spell in 0.25, replacing Glaciate. It kills 1 monster immediately - you can not target with it, it randomly kills 1 amongst the nearest ones. To the best of my knowledge it kills everything in the game including named Pan Lords.

Not quite - it always kills the monster next to you, immediately. Only when more than one monster are in the same distance, there is an element of randomness. So you target by manoeuvering, which is actually quite an interesting exercise. In the case of TRJ this is extra interesting, because you have to make sure to not hurt the fellow, as it would start spawning jellies that make it almost impossible to hit the real guy with Zero.

And yes, Absolute Zero is just wonderful, much nicer than Glaciate. It makes Lehudib's Crystal Spear entirely obsolete, and as a guaranteed one-shot solution it is surprisingly MP-efficient compared to other single-target spells. In combination with Vehumet's MP recovery it lets you kill quite a lot of high-level monsters before you run out. But it has problems with summoners, as their summons will always stand in the way. Curse Toes for example are hard to get this way.

I also killed Mennas and a bunch of OOFs and ancient liches with AZ in that game.
I was so satisfying getting Mennas. He'd almost killed me earlier and I spent quite a while avoiding him.
