[edit: fyi, what started as a Shields topic quickly changed to AC& heavy armour ...and now morphing into a CiP for a mid game FoAK going into extended.
Original title was: A specific and simple Shield scenario: which is best?]

With all the number crunching about shields, I thought: Why not add a simple one!

So my FoAK has a +0 shield and a +2 buckler of protection with Shields skill at 9.
Is it better to have AC/EV/SH of: 15/16/16 or 18/16/13 going into Shoals and Snake?

From the little I can recall from the technical ongoing threads, my guess is the buckler is better since +3 in AC is better than +3 in Shields.

Yes, the buckler is better for now. (But also consider a Large Shield if you find one). Your bigger problem is your weapon sucks. You probably want a nice Glaive; has an enchanted Glaive dropped anywhere? Did you already burn all your enchant weapon scrolls and the Lugonu corrupt weapon ability on the trident? If you did burn them, then you would have trouble getting the Glaive to a high enchant level. So, in that case you might instead look for a high enchant and good base type artifact weapon, even if it's not a polearm.

Both are fine. Keep in mind that you can actually train shields past 9. Fo have good shields aptitude (much better than their dodging apt). You also have an amulet of reflection, so your SH is also useful offensively.

I do not understand why you're training transmutations, or indeed any spells. Statue Form is much too expensive and not particularly useful for Fo. Fo already have good defences because they can wear both a shield and a 2-handed weapon, and need to train less shields to remove penalty.

Instead, wear heavy armour and train armour. You have 20 str, so you can wear whatever you like. If you want, you can train low-level spells.

Do Snake first, because you can often find good shields/large shields there.

Just did a search: there's a Large Shield on D:12. Should I use that right away? It brings me to: 15/14/21 but my 2 utility spells (Poisonous Vapors and Swiftness) are now above 25% failure.

No enchanted or branded polearms above a trident yet; just plain halberg and glaive. I'm not concerned; I usually find something better by V:4 and if not, I go to E:2 for one.

As for weapon artefacts there's only:

In the past with FoAKs, I found that waiting for a better weapon for distortion than a trident accounted for many YASD in Orc and Lair

I like to play hybrids...especially with polearms and Conjure Flame. As for transmutations, I never tried Statue Form on a Fo before, and I had spell slots to spare (with already 6 scrolls of amnesia in stash).
Plus, I like to start training Earth by the time I've branded distortion as I find EE spells useful in Vaults and Depths.
So I stopped training Transmutations and noticed at the same time that I hadn't put much emphasis on Conjure Flame.

I now have no problem clearing up to V:4 with a FoAK in light armour since I'm used to playing casters with Ozo's armour.
The weird thing about this game is I have found few books with low-level spells...plus I have over 3K in gold with almost nothing to spend it on!

Spell slots aren't relevant. The issue is the (opportunity) cost vs. the benefit.

Firstly, it will take a long time to get statue form castable. In the meantime, the XP you spend on it is strictly wasted.
Secondly, you have to wear light (or no) armour, so your defences will be bad in the meantime.
Third, you have 20 str, do mostly melee damage, and have learnt barely any spells. So you're needlessly hampering yourself if you eschew heavy armor.

Statue Form isn't even a super-great spell for this character. If you were FoTm or something, it might have made sense.

If you like to play polearm hybrids, try something like MfSk. Or try FoFi of Chei: Chei is an OK god for Fo.

I have no problem making it to V:4 with light armour...and usually I have collected more low-level spells by now (especially Conjure Flame and Ozo's Armour).

I'm trying to win as a FoAK since I love the synergy. From another thread I started a few weeks ago, I learned I was investing too much in magic too early.
Since then, I've managed to consistently survive the lower branch floors including getting the 2 runes in Lair branches.
The challenge now seems to be mostly V:5 and U:5 where I've had a few YASD from using Corruption too early.

From what you wrote, ...since I have so much gold, I went around and got all the interesting heavier armour I could find in Shops or floor. I'm also questioning putting too much importance on getting MR+++ on a FoAK (currently MR++).
Here's the interesting stuff with their AC/EV/SH wearing the large shield:

Having no rC+, I don't like the FDS for the s branches...plus it is Slay-3.
My pref is to go for the +4 ring mail of cold resistance and getting Armour skill up to 10 by doing Snake:1-3 ...so I can still use Swiftness & Poison Vapour in Shoals:1-3.

No spells for a while. Wear the plate. Wear the large shield and train shields to 15, then train armor. You would have been better off spending your enchants on the +0 glaive but what's done is done. Brutes like you have trouble in shoals, save it till after vaults4. On the other hand formicids like you have trouble in vaults because of undiggable walls so take it slow.

You should wear the plate because it has higher AC, higher GDR, and you can increase the AC by training more armour. These factors more than compensate for the lower EV.

Relying on EV and light armour is fine for casters because they rely on spells to do damage, and typically have low Str. Casting spells (especially high-level spells) in heavy armour with low Str is hard. Also, many "caster" races have bad armour apt. These considerations do not apply to high-strength melee characters like yours. If you want ranged damage, use a bow/crossbow.

It seems to me that you overestimate EV. For instance, you have 10 Dex, but you have way over-trained Dodging (up to 10, with -1 apt). You would have been much better off wearing heavy armour and putting all (or most) of that XP into armour (+1 apt) or shields (+2 apt).

Snake 1-3 done...off to Shoals

So I did Snake:1-3 and peeked down the three stairs to 4th fl.
Having the Amulet of Reflection made it fairly easy but it was still tedious to do without spells.
I can feel a diff in open floors with a Large Shield...but it might the amulet of reflection doing a lot of the work! lol

Shields is now at 15 & Armour at 10, and the only things significant are:
a +5 demon trident of venom (from a scroll of acquirement); and
I ended up sending Roxanne to the Abyss by wielding the wrong weapon (oops)!

For Shoals, I plan on starting with the: +4 ring mail of cold resistance, in order to use a few spells (including now Animate Skeleton), and hopefully before 4th floor: Conjure Flame. (Can you tell I don't like playing a melee brute!)

Good, a demon trident of venom is a decent weapon, better than your current.

It's really not recommended to do shoals next, and it is recommended to keep the plate on. Conjure flame is obsolete by this point, and you can cast animate skeleton in plate if you really feel the need. The characters that are good with shoals are those with strong ranged attacks, which you don't have (and shouldn't try to get at this point). If you do shoals you will likely spend a lot of time wading through water after merfolk avatars or getting pelted at range by satyrs or manticores and having to slog through water to actually kill the things. All of this is a recipe for trouble on a melee brute, doubly so because you can't teleport or blink out of it.

Trident of distortion does much more damage than demon trident of venom. Not to mention: the former can effectively instakill a monster by banishing it.

If you had a demon trident of distortion it would have been a different matter.

Distortion brand blinks enemies around and teleports them. You lose on XP when you banish things. You have to fight things multiple times after they teleport away, heal and come back. You also lose on XP if they teleport away and you don't bump into them again. If you got into close range with a ranged enemy, and it blinks away, it gets to shoot you a bunch of times while you approach it again. It's a dangerous PITA. The demon trident will kill things with less hassle, and the raw damage is not much less.

Note the character worships Lugonu so you can use best weapon for each situation. Fighting a popcorn? Use non-distortion. Fighting a very dangerous monster? Use distortion.

Shoals 1-3 done...off to [edit] E:1-2

So I finished Shoals:1-3 and peeked down the 3 staircases to 4th floor without using any of Lugonu's piety abilities.
I tried at first with the +4 ring mail but I kept getting effects (sleep, mesm, ...) from having only MR+.
So I went for the trusted MR+++ instead (with +3 MR Leather Armour and MR cloak).
That was much easier for my playing style since I also had 3.5 utility spells and 3pips of stealth, which meant I could use Vapour Poison to lure LOS-edge sleeping monsters 1-by-1.

When I found in a shop a +4 chain mail of Pifaziej {MR+ rCorr Str+4 Dex-5}, I decided to give it a try but I found it more difficult since I only could use at first Animate Skeleton and had no more Stealth.
By the end of those 3 floors and with: Armour at 12.5 & +wiz ring, I now have 3 util spells in low teens and Conjure Flame at 22%. Add to that the +wiz staff during exploration and I feel back to being confident! lol
One last thing to add, I find it important to pre-create kill-holes almost anywhere possible as a FoAK so as not to be surrounded. Doing so allows you to Shout if the alternative would be exploring some long stretches of shallow water surrounded by unexplored areas.

Now, a Q about:
a) 16/16/24 with the +3 MR Leather, gives me 3 pips of stealth and 5 util spells (using +wiz ring)
vs
b) 25/11/25 with +4 chain mail of Pifaziej {MR+ rCorr Str+4 Dex-5}, give me util speels in the 8-16% (with both +wiz)

With my playing style, I feel more confident with option a ...but I'm guessing more experienced players would disagree. Why?

No amount of stealth will guarantee you won't get caught in a bad position next to more monsters than you can handle. The chain mail gives much better defenses for when you get into that position, and 8-16% failure chance is really not that bad for a utility spell (though you called poison vapors a utility spell, when that's a purely-offensive spell, so I'm not sure how you're defining that - any spell you're relying on for damage should probably be lower than 16%, but that's a fine failure rate for summon lightning spire, for example.)

I find 2 pips of stealth really important for Fo. It allows you to scout the battlefield since it rarely wakes up LOS monsters ...allowing you to look for weaker attack points.
As for getting "caught in a bad position next to more monsters than you can handle", that's what Loguno's abilities are for; if the distortion trident doesn't quickly thin the crowd, there's always: Banish, Corrupt, or Enter Abyss (in increasing order of emergency)

My bad, I thought utility spells was synonymous with low-level spells.

I never said it wasn't helpful, just that "Maybe not fighting a thing right now" is worse than "Not dying." It's not BAD, it's just that you're really not getting much out of that stealth, compared to the survivability you'd get from good armor. You asked why more experienced players would disagree, that's why I disagree. You can certainly win in less armor because stealth, but you can't fix it in the heat of battle when something wakes up and shouts. It'll make the game harder in those moments when it's the most dangerous. You can win the game with no armor or god or weapons, that doesn't make it easy. ;)

I also don't see anything desperately important to have below a 16% failure chance there. Regen you can cast before engaging, mephitic you can afford to fail once or twice usually, and importantly, most of your spells are redundant because you're an AK and have 4 of the best god abilities in the game. (Don't forget Bend Space!)

I'll try switching before a fight to the Chain Mail in Elf:1&2 when I might attract more than just 2 monsters.

As for Bend Space, it's my goto "spell" for either getting closer or away from many attackers.

So I did E:1&2 (edit: but not the Hall of Blades) and ~75% of E:3 with the Chain Mail and it was easy because there were no big open spaces; mostly narrow hallways connected to roundish rooms with doors galore.
The only issue I had was with be drained (to light pink-red) and then later getting a Crystal Spear to the face dropping me from full HP of ~140 to ~40 ...with a big OUCH in the caption.

Having peeked earlier in Snake:3 and seeing 2 guardian serpents ...I think I'll go finish Shoals now! lol
With Armour exclusive training (thanks to your recommendations), it is now at 15.2 and 3 spells in the 8-10% range along with 3 more at 16-17% fail (with both wiz+).
{ If only I had some stealth, I'd be Happy! Now I'm just cautiously pleased }

3 runes collected...and off to Depths

I just had one scare: in V:5, I had already used Corruption and got swarmed in between 2 quadrants so I used Enter the Abyss.
Since I was highly drained, I proceeded to kill weaklings while also look to possibly get to A:3 for the rune.
Once on A:3, as soon as I got close to areas with multiple sleeping monsters (usually an indication of the rune vault), I would get yanked to a different section of the Abyss.
So I went down to A:4 and then to A:5.
Holy !^%* A:5 is insanely FUBAR!
I tried and tried but wasted a handful of Potions of Heal Wounds and another handful of Curing.
Ended up going back to V:5 in worse shape than when I left ...but luckily the threatening swarm had dissipated by then.

Looking back, the only I would do differently is to stop training Armour around level 20. I just thought continuing would make the spell rates drop drastically at some point...but No! It was only once I started training Spellcasting for the first time that the failure rate started to drastically drop.
Thanks for all your advice, this FoAK has evolved differently than I expected it would and it is back to a state where I feel comfortable with it thanks to a manual of stealth and some good rings.

Anymore suggestions?

Train more Fighting.

Armour Skill has negligible effect on spell failure rate. If you want to reduce failure rate, train the spell schools directly. Spellcasting has a small effect: 1 point of spellcasting = 1/4 point of training every school.

If you include the full dump (especially including the action table), you'll probably get more useful advice.

5 runes ... Where to next?

So I've cleared everything I have experience with and managed to get the Abyssal Rune.
This is the 2nd time I've come this far as I once finished a 15-rune with GrEE following the incredible Character Guide on the wiki.

So what now? Am I balanced enough to continue? If so, where?
Any recommendations for skills training or whatever else?
My guess is I should first drop some useless spells as I have 9 scrolls of amnesia. Which ones do I drop and which ones to memorize?

Do you have a better body armour? That Slay-3 is quite bad. I hope you haven't spent scrolls of enchant armour on the shield.
If you need spell slots, I would amnesia Meph Cloud (many monsters have too high HD now), Inner Flame (Petrify is better) and maybe Conjure Flame.

Only other decent artefact armour are Plates at +6 &+7. Then I'd have issues getting rF++. So I keep telling myself the Slay+5 on the ring is compensating!

What's even worse is I finally found a Storm Dragon armour in Zot for the Trove. It needs to be +3 ...and I only have 1 scroll of enchant armour. double :oops:

Thanks! I was thinking of keeping Meph Cloud with Ignite Poison. Poor man's Fire Storm!

What should I learn for extended?

As for next branch, I'm guessing I should do the Hells with the Fire and Cold themes considering my resistances.
Or should I do half a Zig to get those scrolls for the Trove?

rF+ is good enough unless you are on Zot 5, Cerebov level or Gehenna.
I usually have many rings in extended, swapping to maximize rF+ OR rC+ or rElec depending on level.
Meph + Ignite Poison is obsolete due to BVC which requires just a single cast and slows down monsters also.
I don't think you want more spells, Iron Shot and BVC are good enough and level 9 spells would require too much XP. You already have very good utility spells like Animate Dead or Spectral Weapon.

What about non-artefact armor? You're not casting that many spells, all told, and most of them are lower-level. What does your character look like in gold dragon scales?

GoldDS: 44/12/28 (but the extra rC+ and rPois become useless) and spells have much higher fail.

I fetched the +7 plate with rCorr and it gives 46/15/28 with fail at 10% max...so I'll use that for a half Zig to get the 2 enchant armour scrolls for Trove

YASD: in Zig:11 to 3 berzerked Juggernauts

It was totally evitable; Damn moth of wrath that wouldn't die with BVC!

I did Corrupt at less than half HP and the use of that MP made it also too late to use Enter the Abyss. I should have just used the latter instead, and upon return from the Abyss at full health used the former.

And all I was waiting for since Zig:2 was 1 more scroll of enchant armour to access the Trove.

Thank you all for your suggestions and recommendations; I learned so much...and I hope others will if they play FoAKs.

Next time, don't worry about troves. By the time you can access them, they're of very marginal use. And for God's sake, don't do a Zig to try to get into a trove.
