Worst episodes on D:1

This is the opposite of the "Good finds on D:1" thread.

This thread is for those times when you're on D:1 (possibly still in sight of the entry stairs), and Crawl does something to show you in no uncertain terms that no, you absolutely will not be getting the Orb this time. You may or may not already be dead, but it's clear the game's middle finger is flying full mast at you.

I'll get us started. My last game, I found this ring right in front of the entrance -

  Code:
c - a cursed -5 ring of protection (left hand)

Yes, contrary to common sense, I do wear-test rings on D:1 (it makes identifying the remove curse scroll easier), but damn.

It doesn't top the time I was slaughtered by a kobold with a flaming weapon right in front of the entrance, but this is going to make starting as a VpIE a bit trickier...

Poisoned by a kobold with a poison weapon on D:1, near death. "No problem, pretty sure this stack of 3 potions is ! of healing". It's a stack of 3 ! of cure mutation. Die of poison.

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

This isn't technically D:1, but I rolled up an Abyssal Knight the other day, hit o to autoexplore (having forgotten where he REALLY was) and the first and last thing my character ever sees is a smoke demon, who instantly smites him to death. My first one-keypress YASD.

A MINUS FIVE ring of protection? Can you get negative AC, increasing the damage you take from every attack?

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

Yes, you can. That character's AC is currently -3, and apparently it does increase damage from every attack. The bats sure were taking a lot more HP off me than they normally do...

Luckily, I've managed to get him to level 2 for Throw Frost, so I'm no longer forced to blast enemies at point-blank and I might yet survive. Hopefully a remove curse scroll will show up soon.

I didn't even know trolls could spawn on D1 lol. Was it that green unique T i think he's new with .9? He's eaten me a few times

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

I think I've run into electrocution or distortion on D1 five or six times so far. But while frustrating, that's really not the most obnoxious thing because at least the suffering is brief. The worst D1 experience I've had was a kobold with poisoned darts that got a first-turn on me when I went around a corner. I one-shotted it with a spell, and then got to watch my hit points tick down to zero with nothing I could do to stop it. None of the potions I had found by that point had any useful effects, and no more turned up during my brief frantic search of unexplored territory.

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

I found a Wand of Disintegration on D1 before. Problem was, I didn't know that it existed until the Goblin one-shotted me with it.

My brother rolled up a Chaos Knight of Xom a long while ago. Xom one-shotted him with a fireball (fire miscast I think?) while the dungeon entrance was still in sight.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

I'm assuming it was an altar vault, as there were stone or crystal walls walls and an Okawaru altar just behind the troll.

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

Don't even remember the race/class but I remember the very first creature I face was a kobold that spawned with darts of poison right near the entrance. Killed it then took a few steps and died. It was pretty comical. Had another character on D1 die to a kobold with some sort of explosive darts. 2 hits and that was it.

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

Here's one that's close to D:1. The first thing I saw on D:2 was a radiant altar of Vehumet, which I first thought was going to be a rather good find for a Naga elementalist. I stepped towards it and:
  Code:
92 ultor the Sneak (level 3, -3/28 HPs)
Began as a Naga Fire Elementalist on Sept 15, 2011.
Engulfed by a cloud of flame (31 damage)
... on Level 2 of the Dungeon.
The game lasted 00:07:41 (1217 turns).

Re: Worst episodes on D:1

Lets see:

First room I entered had 2 gnolls in it which immediately netted me. Death

Spawned in a room with an Ooze, walked out of the room, another Ooze waited around the corner. Dodged that one and a THIRD ooze in another room. Had these 3 oozes dogging me the whole way while I tried to get to XL2 (was vamp enchanter, iirc).

Turned the corner into Lyjib. Ok, shouldn't be too hard, I'm XL3. Blasted with wand of draining. >.<

Probably the WORST was as an IE. Was under either Nemelex or Elvylion (can't remember which) as I was backtracking to sac items. Got back to lvl 1, encountered something big (don't remember what it was). Cast my freshly learned Throw Icicle... miscast, freezing cloud, instantly dead.

My first game in the tournament was with a KeFE. It went something like this.

You miscast Flame Tongue.
You miscast Flame Tongue.
You miscast Flame Tongue.
The gnoll hits you with a spear. You die.

I've started a few times next to the "Door covered with warnings" filled with early-game monsters that would spell death to any beginning character en masse.

Twice, that room has included a jelly.

Jellies don't care about warnings on doors; they'll eat them anyway, and then proceed to mercilessly slaughter fledgling characters.

Run away son jellies are slow! Ugh but I know what you mean I often screw up the pathing to give them a hit or two which can be disastrous even to a somewhat well established character.

There is a D1 vault with a goblin and a kobold and several blocked-off/ trapped gnolls. Be careful in. 10 because inherent reaching will kill you as those gnolls are armed with halberds.

Started in a predefined room that had a long corridor with some enemies on display. No regular doors, only one in the floor. Dropped down and appeared at the dead end of a corridor with 2 bats a goblin, hobgoblin and kobold between me and any hope of surviving. The game didn't give me the finger it violated me.

All chaos knights start in the abyss. So it's basically not even D1 yet.

In new versions it's Abyssal Knights that start in the Abyss. Chaos Knights start with Xom. So Xom chucked him in the Abyss right off the bat.

Very funny.

oh. yeah. forgot about that Great Chaos Knight Divide.

Anyway, Xom once banished my troll for no fricking reason around D5. Thought that was it. I found exit in a less than 100 turns though.

In the 10-15-or-so times that entry vault has generated for me, I have never had a jelly in there. Most of the time some goblin or kobold comes around and opens the door when I'm away.
