The best crawl guide ever written

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

The best crawl guide ever written

http://www.swallowtail.org/crawl/tutorial.shtml

It contains such gems as the following advice about what to do when there's a dangerous enemy nearby and you're out of mana on a caster: "thump it and hope". To be fair that's one of three options, but hey, it's my favorite one. Probably the best guide you can find that supports people who want to play as a Gray Elf.

Any idea what version that might be? Is it Stone Soup already?

Re: The best crawl guide ever written

The home page of the site lists it as " a resource for players and admirers of Linley Henzell's Dungeon Crawl", so, I'd say probably not. Also the last post on the website was in 2004, if that gives you a more accurate ballpark. I dunno when DCSS forked off from Linley's.

The last version for that website was Linley's Dungeon Crawl 4.00 beta 24. DCSS was released 19th September 2006. Linley's Dungeon Crawl 4.1 had some good features and code cleanup, but it was devilishly hard. DCSS forked off 4.00 beta 26.

i suspect tasonir is lying about the quality of this guide, because it doesn't mention statue form, chei, vinestalkers OR naga

You are entirely correct, but I gave it credit for being the only gray elf guide I am aware of. I do have a soft spot for rare elvish species, as sludge elf was a good transmuter race, and goes well with Chei.

I managed to win sludge elf before it was removed; of course as a transmuter, of course with chei, and of course 15 runes (because Chei is the best god for extended) right here: http://dobrazupa.org/morgue/tasonir/mor ... 000958.txt

Haven't played gray elf yet, but maybe one day.

Is Linley's Crawl still available somewhere? If yes, then playing a grey elf can be done. Playing a gray elf is a tougher challenge, but perhaps there is a way.

This site even has 1.03 from 1997. Wow. You can play as one of four classes and can only go down like in Rogue.
If all the world were apple pie,
And all the sea were ink,
And all the trees were bread and cheese,
I'd still play Dungeon Crawl.
