The Never-Ending Manual (is this a bug?> No.)

Okay, so gnoll distributed training, slow skill leveling yes yes...BUT...

I have been carrying this Manual of Spellcasting picked up in a Wizlab on Vault 2: Through the rest of Vaults (yes including V:5), all of Depths, Slime, Crypt, down to Zig:6, and now to half of Zot:5 (one lung of the orb chamber and change). I could have sworn I picked up a manual with a gnoll before, and it didn't last nearly so long.

I picked up this manual around the same time I found the Staff of Wucad Mu (55677). I haven't put it down since. I have gained 8 levels of Spellcasting plus after getting the manual (level 14 at 57266, level 22 at 99017).

Shouldn't this manual have expired by now? Or is this somehow normal?

I think it's normal, notice that your Spellcasting is just 3 levels higher than Evocations.
Manuals should give more benefit than just 3 levels when you have +8 aptitude.

Spellcasting 14 at +8 aptitude: 1500 skill points
Spellcasting 22 at +8 aptitude: 4425 skill points
Skill points in a manual: 2000 to 3000
Since half the skill points for the skill come from the manual and half from your actual XP, the manual still has between 537 and 1538 skill points left.

Related: is there a message that notifies a player when a manual has expired? If so, I'd like to create a force_more for it in my rcfile. Whether it is optimal or not, I typically do reshuffle my skill allocation to take advantage of a manual and I'd like to know when this temporary allocation ought to be changed.

Also it would be great to be able to set a skill training target to the end of the manual from the inventory menu IMO.

Related: I did a robin with a couple other people using a Gnoll and we got an armour manual in a bailey somewhere around d:9. We finished a 3-rune game and still hadn't exhausted the manual.

I suppose it turns out that having a +8 aptitude is really, really good. You'll never need that many skill points to max it, hence why manuals never end. It just feels slow when you're actually playing because you're splitting your experience ~25 ways or however many skills there are.

The aptitude has nothing to do with how long it takes to use up the manual. It's entirely due to Gn training every skill at once.

In other words, it's possible to reach 22 (from 14) with <3000 points because of the +8 aptitude. If it was a +0 race, that would be:

14: 6000
22: 17700

So the manual would have expired at roughly level 19 (which is 12,300 points, or roughly 3000 from manual + 3000 from experience). The perception that it has lasted longer is because they earned more levels, due to each level requiring less skill points, due to the aptitude. So how long the manual lasts IS dependent on aptitude, when you measure how long it lasts in levels. It does not matter when you measure it in points. However, "points" are never displayed to the player, players think in terms of levels, and that's why it seems like it's lasting forever.
