No food rework approval thread? Food rework approval thread!

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

No food rework approval thread? Food rework approval thread!

What the heck, remove food was the main topic in tavern for years and now that we're almost there no one wrote about?

We are entering a new era of DCSS!
Only generic ration and clean chunk are left! So much useless clutter is gone! Rejoice!

If all proceed with this timing, for 0.26 rations and chunks will be removed too and Dcss finally merged in hellcrawl.

I dunno. I am playing trunk right now, and I have two kinds of rations in my inventory (although both are called only "ration"), and also I can see inedible chunks on the ground.

  Code:
Eat which item?

    Comestibles

x - 21 rations
U - 6 rations

Have you started the game today? Upgrading existing game can result in duplicates and removed items.

OK, I managed to fix it by throwing one of the stacks on the ground, then when I picked them up, they merged in the other group. I bet I would never have realized that this something was changed :D

I'm a big fan of this change. Losing mutagenic chunks is a bit of a bummer, I'd love to see some way to mutation roulette similarly, maybe a dungeon feature like mutagenic clouds that dissipate when you step in them? Overall, I think it's a big improvement, and am happy to see it come down the pipe, I just hope that my tendency to throw away perfectly good runs to going "Eh, mutations are fun, though!" won't be going away completely.

Potions of mutation aren't going anywhere. Mutagenic chunks were bad for many reasons (they encouraged you to store mutagenic monsters for later for example).

Re: No food rework approval thread? Food rework approval thr

Yeah - I just often find I don't have enough potions of mutation to go for roulette - I often only have one or two lying around when I win the game, and I'm certainly not going to blow them once I'm past the lair branches and have enough stored up that they could save me from dangerous mutation things - I really like early mutation roulette because I don't mind throwing a character away. I really liked that. It's a small complaint, and I'd love to see "early mutation roulette" back in in some way, but I get why the change was made.

Buckle your seatbelts boys and girls because it's time for the one and only game design genius, the professional thankscummer of legend himself to save mutation roulette.

Replace one of the three down staircases on each level with purple stairs. These stairs give you one mutation according to mut chunk rules if & only if the level you're descending to is unvisited, otherwise they function as normal stairs. Now you get one (1) cool and interesting mutation decision on every non-ending floor, and you don't have messy stockpiling behavior. Plus you can start mutscumming on D:1!

Make one of the other stairs, unknown to the player which, guaranteed to collapse with a LOT of noise when you walk down. Interesting decisions. Do I take structurally sound stairs dripping with mutagenic slime, or stairs of suspicious construction A or B? Hmmmm..

Re: No food rework approval thread? Food rework approval thr

My mut chunk fix proposal:
  • Cut Jiyva as a god of worship-Jiyva mutations lists (one of the main gimmicks) are less permanent and useful than Xom's, jellies eating items for piety leads to weird scumming by going to cleared floors to max piety after starting worship, neutral slimes are still a holdover despite good gods losing friendliness with holy monsters, Slimify is extremely strong and one dimensional removal for not much cost (since it is likely the only thing piety is spent on), attribute shifting is annoying to micromanage, Remove Bad Mutation is used more often against 'gifts' Jiyva gives you than malmutations from enemies (and Zin is better for any non-demonspawn at clearing a bad mut list and keeping it clean), the capstone is literally "get the rune of this branch without actually playing it", and the non-Temple aspect is done way worse than Lugonu or Beogh since most people won't even bother unless they get a lucky early altar over just using their current god to win.
  • Repurpose Jiyva altars as "shrines of Jiyva", which are single-use, 4-12x mut chunk style mut roulette (I haven't run exact numbers yet to see what would be appropriate) that anyone other than worshippers of Zin can use without penalty (Zin worshippers can either get a piety loss or penance, maybe excommunication if you want to make it severe so they don't gamble with them). Scatter them about the entire game, with a guaranteed one on Slime:5 in the usual altar spot. Shrines don't go away after the Royal Jelly dies. Xom is entertained when you use one.

If there is concern about stockpiling shrines, have them dissolve after leaving the floor they are located on (except for the Slime:5 shrine, which could be coded to either not dissolve until use or leaving the floor after the Royal Jelly dies), but I really don't see stockpiling shrines as an issue since Ctrl+F amnesia->Ctrl+F spellbook, good god capstone rotation, shops, and plenty of other 'backtrack for item' cases still exist in DCSS.

Yeah but with all the food rework going on now, the god that should be removed is Fedhas :)

I do like that the the generic "ration" can have the appearance of so many previous food types! I hate when flavor gets removed with all the mechanics too, but this is at least visually amusing.

Just something satisfying about picking up a cheese in Zot.
