Most dangerous foe

My personal vote is for overconfidence, though often all three are hanging out on a level (usually Elf or Vault).

"Other" is if you can think of any particular monster or unique more dangerous than these (hydra, Mennas, Rupert).

Hubris is a better term.

The Abyss seems to have been left off the list.

Inattention by far. I know how to play Crawl, I know which levels I should enter at what level and with which character, but for the life of me I can't take my fingers of the Tab key fast enough.

Before temple - mostly bad luck and inattention. After that - overconfidence and inattention.

Inattention by far. It spawns overconfidence and Teh Stoopid in its path like a giant spore drops ballistos, and it's just as likely to blow up in your face.

Even 27-head hydras and Mennas tangoing with Rupert can be defeated if inattention isn't hampering you. With inattention, a slowed, confused rat can pierce your jugular.

The Abyss is dangerous because inattention spawns in packs there.

I find the other way around; it's Overconfidence that spams Inattention like there's no tomorrow ...

Actually the most dangerous one is the one who exploits your long- and short-term weaknesses.
If your characters are weak in melee, it's Rupert or Snorg. If your characters are weak in dispelling clones, your deadly foes are ancient liches, rakshasa and Mara. If your characters have a player who is inattentive, overconfident and stupid, it's the player who is their most dangerous foe -- or, if said precisely, most dangerous ally and commander.

Someone should make a murderous hubris level for Pan with -CTELE and lock-down/pre-map all the exits and the entrance.

But I thought the levels with the unique Pan lords were already like that. Sure, maybe the exits aren't actually locked down, but people see the arrival message and think "Uh oh! I'll lose a rune if I leave NOW..."

You can still leave those levels easily.

I couldn't leave. (Well, if I would ever get to Pan anyway)
I have to get every single portal/rune/unique if somehow possible - that's why my most dangerous foe is the shaft trap...

Also overconfidence for sure! Playing careful (retreating, stair dancing, leaving dangerous enemies alone, ...) one can tackle most areas even with weak characters. But sometimes it feels lame to stairdance the vault guards on v8 and more awesome just blasting them with mephitic cloud and darting down some unknown corridor for retreat while dragons scorch your ass.

TAB key...

I lost my best 2 runer KoBe fighing with TAB key some alone skeletal warrior when a "something of fire" (did not remember what was) had 3 free turns to throw flames at me, then inevitable death!! :(

I was using TAB since the skeletal warrior was unable to hurt me much, and its HP were slowling descending...

The most dangerous foe is that blasted Orb. It's at fault for all these heros throwing themselves at this carnivorous dungeon in the first place. Just think of all the scientific and cultural advancements that could have been had if the entrance to "The Dungeon" were just sealed forever and people didn't rely on the promise of an incredible, infinite-wish-granting Deus ex Machina to solve all their problems.

You stand before the entrance to the Dungeon of Zot.
The entrance is permanently sealed.
You turn back to town.
You take up a career as a patent clerk.

That XL:20 Kobozerker Ghost who died on DL:7 after abandoning Trog in the temple, then ran from summons up the stairs and got Mauled there.

You are assigned to sort out some old, unused files.
You find an ancient patent filed by a Mr Zot relating to an orb he has invented.
You start to wonder...

In terms of tone I'm going to go for something between The Goonies and Animal House.

It would have to be like a Tarenino film. It tells the story of multiple characters over course of many disjointed scenes, each one of which ends with a violent death.

I think you're going the wrong way with this. DCSS:TM isn't going to be an action-packed blockbuster. It's going to be Groundhog Day with the RNG making sure every day is a different death.
