Secret Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Crawl Games

Now, I see a lot of people here who know how to play Crawl very well. However, what I've commonly seen is that while these people know the fundamentals, by heart, even, they don't really know about the "secret" methods to truly master the game. I wanted to rectify this-- the devs have tried their best to keep this knowledge hidden, but today all shall be revealed.

Cheibriados is a very strong god, as he gives you lots of stats, and stats are very good-- high int, for instance, means that spell hunger will be a thing of the past. However, it takes some time to get enough piety to get your bonuses to +15. Thankfully, there's a means to speed up your piety game. If you join Gozag, and then abandon him (make sure to use your free potion petition first!) his wrath will usually haste up new monsters. Now, since you're Chei, and Chei loves it when you kill fast things, you'll build piety super fast.

Vault Wardens: Mark can be a very useful power! While dangerous if you get caught in the middle of a level, it can be very powerful if you camp next to stairs. You can use it to lure out dangerous monsters in levels such as Tomb or Zot:5, allowing you to face dangerous level-wide vaults on your own terms. Consider leaving stray vault wardens alive for this reason. In theory, Ironbrand Convokers should work as well!

When using a wand, you'll waste charges if the wand isn't identified. However, there is a good way to get around this-- all it requires is an Enslavement wand and access to Maurice. Monsters will always use only one charge when firing wands, which means that you can get Maurice to steal your attack wands, enslave him and then use him to stretch out your wand uses, saving yourself identify scrolls.

But that's not all that Maurice can do. Fedhas followers can make use of him as well. It's not commonly known, but your Wandering Mushrooms can be polymorphed by enemies with polymorph wands. If they fail their MR check, you'll get an Oklob plant every time. This means that you can exploit such enemies to get free oklobs-- any enemy with a poly wand will work, but Maurice obviously works best, as you can give him a poly wand at any time. With some practice, it's possible to get many oklobs in this manner. With these oklobs, you can essentially kite the entire early-mid dungeon into your oklobs and laugh as they are shredded by the plants' acid, and you won't even have to spend any fruit!

If you're a summoner fighting batty monsters, it might be worthwhile to slow yourself. The enemy monsters will get less time to attack, while your own summons will be able to attack them all the same.

Yara's Violent Unraveling is often derided as useless, but it has some secret uses. If you use the aforementioned Gozag trick, you'll have an endless supply of monsters to blast with it! What's more, if you're short on cancellation you can use it do dispel yourself-- you'll get a bad mut, but that can often be better than having a status effect on you.

Fedhas worshippers should memorize Gell's Gravitas. It has the unique ability to turn your mushrooms hostile, but without incurring penance-- meaning that Fedhas will still allow you to fire through them. What this means is that you can create walls of mushrooms that stand still and block hostile enemies, while still being able to fire through your wall! It's like conjure flame, but in many ways even better!

I hope these tips were useful! Please share your own advice if you have any.

No, that was coincidental, actually. It was posted as I was thinking of stupid ideas for this thread, and happened to have the same "advice". Using Yara's is slightly less stupid on a mummy, though (but is a colossal misallocation of xp nonetheless)

I believe tips about fighting hasted monsters as Chei (good luck if you meet a 2headed ogre and alike) and using multiple enslave charges(the best wand by far) to potentially save a charge from weaker wands is a nice trap/trolling attempt

I had hoped that would be obvious by the time I had mentioned spell hunger.

Listing "less spell hunger" as a selling point of Chei is, though.

You forgot the secret of using trample (from elephants and others) to move for free. Reduce your turn count! Save food and piety! Impress your friends!

Felids can boost Okawaru piety gain by dying as often as possible to reduce their own XL relative to the monsters' HD.

Oh, and; play felids to minimise the amount of damage you take from torment. You can even use the above technique to further reduce torment damage!

In fact, this works for every god that gives piety for kills!

Re: Secret Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Crawl Games

A joke thread? Preposterous. That first tip is one of the best tips I've ever seen. Gozag into Chei needs to become the new Okawaru -> TSO switch. Not only that, but it's particularly good on one absurdly powerful race: Spriggans. Yes, Spriggans of Gozag -> Chei, the new meta. Proof:

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You are tiny and cannot use many weapons and most armour.
You have supernaturally acute eyesight.
You are a herbivore.
((You cover ground extremely quickly.))
You need consume almost no food.

Granted, I did farm Gozag for a while in order to call more shops, but that's optional. Early game can be a bit rough due to your low hp when facing things that go through EV:

4436 | D:3 | HP: 4/25 [Natasha/magic dart (8)]
4875 | D:3 | HP: 4/25 [Jessica/nerve-wracking pain (13)]

Yes, I nearly died to Jessica of all monsters. But hang in there, and just keep calling down shops. I started out with the detestable skills of short blades, hexes, and stealth because these weak abilities are all spriggans are naturally good at the start.

  Code:
6166 | Temple   | Became a worshipper of Gozag Ym Sagoz the Greedy
  6746 | D:4      | Reached skill level 6 in Dodging
  7857 | D:5      | Reached skill level 8 in Short Blades
 15955 | Lair:1   | Reached skill level 6 in Hexes

I found EH so stabbing was useful, even if it wounded my heart. Fortunately, I would eventually be freed from this curse:

  Code:

 40149 | Shoals:4 | Reached skill level 13 in Spellcasting
 45541 | Vaults:1 | Reached skill level 12 in Transmutations
 47046 | Vaults:2 | Reached skill level 10 in Earth Magic

And after some final shopping to please the lord Gozag, it was time:

  Code:
 47215 | Vaults:2 | Bought a bread ration for 90 gold pieces
 47215 | Vaults:2 | Bought a potion of might for 72 gold pieces
 47215 | Vaults:2 | Bought a scroll of enchant weapon for 135 gold pieces
47769 | Temple   | Fell from the grace of Gozag
47769 | Temple   | Became a worshipper of Cheibriados the Contemplative
 48809 | Vaults:2 | Reached skill level 2 in Unarmed Combat

I cannot stress this enough: Once you go statue form, start punching things immediately. It's totally cool to have 2 skill in unarmed, your fists are stone, and stone is JUSTICE.

  Code:
 53794 | Snake:2  | Reached skill level 9 in Unarmed Combat
 54399 | Snake:4  | Reached skill level 9 in Invocations
 54407 | Snake:4  | Was forgiven by Gozag

Now we're cruising. Hell, we're practically going light speed. And by that I mean light speed through the time portion of the time space continuum, because we are clearly not moving quickly. Doing so would be wrong. We were forgiven by whos-ze-whats-its, I don't remember their name, we're with CHEIBRIADOS now. ALL HAIL CHEIBRIADOS.

I'll spare you all the rest of the details, obviously we get translocations because physical movement is for squares, and we perfer to pass through space and time rather than be pushed around by those still interacting with the material plane.

  Code:
 56848 | Depths:1 | Reached skill level 6 in Translocations

The rest is pretty straightforward. Apply stone fists of JUSTICE to anyone who doesn't TAKE IT EASY. Here's the final action table.

In short, spriggans have two main weaknesses:

1) -30% hp. Fix this with statue form, and poof, (almost) normal hp again.
2) Fast movement. THIS IS NOT COOL. Fix this with Chei. Chei is COOL. Take it easy.

Thank me now, or thank me later, but this is the only way to FLY. AC + EV of 115. ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN.

Re: Secret Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Crawl Games

To mitigate the effect of shafting, always dive to D:15 as quickly as possible and work back up. Then you will only ever be shafted into a fully explored level.
