Polytheism

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Polytheism

I came up with this idea as a partial joke a while back, but a fellow player and I got to thinking that it COULD be potentially make workable -- a "polytheist" option.

This would most likely be a race (some kind of "Celestial" maybe?), although a class is an option as well ("Invoker").

The idea is that the build is inherently terrible (either drastically awful apts, or, more likely, drastically awful stats). The upside is that you get to worship two gods at once.

Piety gain would be normal, but is divided evenly between both gods (still functions according to their rules). Piety loss is treated the same way (meaning that spamming an Invo on one god will cost less initially, but drop the dual-piety for both and be regained MUCH slower than normal).

The biggest qualifier is that only compatible gods can be chosen, based off of alignment. You cannot, for example, worship both TSO and Kiku. Of additional note is that you cannot worship gods that inherently cancel each other -- Trog and Sif, Gozag and Fedhas, Dith and Qazlal, etc. In other words, each god would have a "match list" of allowed matches. This would work like trying to pray at an Altar of Yred while a gargoyle, for example -- you would be refused the right to worship, except in this case by your first choice of god.

The synthesis would have two focus points for balance:

1) You, in and of yourself, are rather sub-par for a race/class. You could not survive for long on your own, and are dependent upon your gods.

2) Piety is much more precious, and invocations much more impactful. Just because you find the two altars you want on D:2 doesn't mean you can hit max piety fast. Piety is a "slow but steady" process because, in essence, while you get "more bang for you buck" with each point of piety, it will essentially be progressing at half-speed. Invocations will seem less costly at first, but you'll also have to remember that you'll be dropping both gods at once, and this is regained slowly.

These ideas can be retooled, of course --

Variant 1) Piety gain/loss could be slower (making it easier to spam invos at seemingly low cost, but take 4 times longer to regain that piety you just spend).

Variant 2) Piety gain/loss could be faster (like wearing a permanent double-power amulet of faith, making spamming invocations impossible but also allowing you to get back up to full piety faster).

The big point here is making sure that the immense power gained from two gods makes the character EQUAL to a normal race/background with one god. Just different. A true god-focused run (because we all know that even monks aren't REALLY god focused, per se).

Sooo...thoughts, suggestions, total trashing?

Re: Polytheism

It's on the list of things that will never happen, because it's been well established that Crawl is a game about food and eating things. This has nothing to do with either.

Whenever you make a suggestion about a new game mechanic or other aspect of the game, you must remember the spirit of Crawl's philosophy, which can be summed up with the immortal words, "You have to eat something NOW!" Let that principle guide you. It underscores everything that Crawl is about.
