So, just got back into DCSS after a couple years off, and I decided to do a stoop and try Zot Defence again, as I really enjoyed the variant.
Well, I'd say i'm quite pleased with my progress lol, but tips and advice for next steps are welcome.
If anyone knows how to actually beat this, or a way to get the runes to actually friggin' spawn, that'd be wonderful.
Or how to get those blasted rock vaults to open.
EDIT: If only my actual Dungeon Crawl Games go as good as this....SIGH

I found that making shallow water and long lines of oklob plants along all the walls helped, and steadly expanding out to cover more and more of the map.
Shallow water means that enemies will move slower and sometimes fumble instead of attacking, making your defenses better.

My wins were with FeSu and OpNe in 0.10. Felid for speed/extra lives, octopode to take advantage of water, and in general worthwhile armour doesn't spawn in the hardest part of the game so the biggest disadvantage of these races is negated. Both were of Sif Muna to get book gifts. It looks like in the FeSu game I transitioned from using oklob plants to just keeping a cloud of dragons around me at all times, lol.

the bloody vaults, how do i open them?

Pretty sure the vaults are made with unbreakable stone and can't be opened. I might be remembering wrong and they're only normal stone, in which case the options are LRD or Shatter.

They were, but i remember doing an archelogical dig of the taverns past and someone saying they eventually open :/
