Since Gourmand is only useful for spellcasters, may as well do it right and have an amulet of energy instead, that gives the hungerless spellcasting of the staff without the channeling.

I like the suggestion as a potentially interesting choice for mid-game spellcasters (+ combine with " of regenMP?).

Yeah, the niche for gourmand includes some early game characters. But surely a berserker would switch to faith, regen, reflection, etc once he finds one. Gourmand as a convenience in the early game if you haven't found a better amulet doesn't seem like a strong argument for not changing things.

Gourmand is also very desirable for characters who want to frequently switch between Vamp and other weapons. This helps a lot in the Depths, for example, where you normally engage groups of regular monsters, but often encounter other groups of mostly undead monsters.
