Armor penetrating attacks

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Armor penetrating attacks

In ADOM, when monster punches you, it has a chance that it will "punch through your armor", and ignore your protection value. Some monsters are always punching through your armor.

Why won't implement same system here?

I don't know how adom works, but in crawl AC is a roll, I am not sure what is the minimum value, but effectively if you have a bad roll it ignores your AC.

And you already have things like torment or smiting that ignore AC

Re: Armor penetrating attacks

I'm pretty sure (but too lazy to check) that the minimum AC roll is 0, i.e. no damage reduction.

Electric, pain, distortion, brimstone, and I'm sure I'm missing some also ignore AC.

Re: Armor penetrating attacks

I believe there are already some monsters who do this - I think it was phantasmal warriors, who ignore your AC. It's pretty rare though, and imho I'd rather it stay that way. As mentioned armor always has a chance to block nothing, which is close enough to this anyways.

Re: Armor penetrating attacks

They used to ignore SH and only be affected by half of your AC. How weird is that?

This feature was removed, though.

Depending on the armor you wear, it has a "guaranteed damage reduction" (GDR) value. So most armors will always reduce damage by some amount. It's rarely all that noticeable, but you will be able to tell as a Draconian or if you're wearing a robe and somehow have ridiculously high AC.

GDR only applies to melee attacks though.

Re: Armor penetrating attacks

It doesn't apply to ranged non-magic attacks?

Although OP was specifically referring to "punching" anyway. I'll concede that saying "always reduce damage" was wrong there though.

That's why it's called GMDR.
