Rods weren't taken away as much as they got turned into wands+the lightning rod evocable

rod of shadows was, but it was confusing in that it followed different rules than the actual spell, and crawl really didn't need another source of powerful allies

not to be too nitpicky but that's the one criticism I will give because I really like the rods into wands change :D

To me, 'A changes into B' looks the same as 'A is removed and B is added'.

Well, let's say that the item category "rods" has been removed, if not the items in the category. I was actually amazed by the fact that the current lightning rod is an improvement, even by my taste (I tend not to like XP recharging items).

Lightning rod is weird b/c if you use it 3 times you are incentivized to use it once more against nothing so that it can recharge.

You missed the only two removals that actually mattered: Singularity and felid jump ability. Also I think both were only present in one version, so they really emphasize "short is the life of features". At least singularity was only in .16, felid jump was removed in .15 I think? It may have been in more than one release.

I wasn't around then. I think I begun playing in 2009, stopped in 2012 or 2013 (the edition with fully armourless draconians) and came back to playing last year. So I probably have a hole between v 10 and 18. I also didn't check for updates back then.

Try either a .15 felid, especially if you're melee, because jump made them actually fun and unique.

Or if you want to abuse late game power play anything in .16, especially with a good translocations aptitude, which will wreck literally everything in the game once you get singularity castable. For particular fun, try a SpEn who stabs everything early game, and when you need to transition to "not stabbing" for the end game, you have +4 translocations aptitude, and only have to get translocations to roughly 25 skill to handle everything else. One skill to train! I'm assuming you had some spellcasting, although you will probably want that around level 20 eventually too. Of course, for slightly more experience feel free to use any race, it doesn't have to be spriggans.
