unrand idea: firewalk boots

basically, boots that let you trail fire like a fire elemental, but only if you're moving swiftly:

+0 firewalk boots {rF+, rC-}
  • running ego
  • if you move in two consecutive turns, and your second move is no more than 45 degrees away from the direction of your first move (so, the same direction or a diagonal from it), the space you left is filled with a flaming cloud that lasts ~3 turns.
note that the boots wouldn't actually protect you from the flaming clouds, so be careful not to backtrack!

Sounds good to me, but if found early, they might unbalance the game a bit...

That's true of a lot of unrands though! Artifacts are allowed to be OP because they're quite rare.

Re: unrand idea: firewalk boots

1. if it doesn't protect you from the clouds then it breaks autoexplore (autoexplore runs into a corner -> autoexplore can't get out of corner because there's a cloud in the way)
2. xom already has this

Re: unrand idea: firewalk boots

I'm not sure the "only if you're running swiftly" part is necessary. Seems like it would be taken for granted most of the time since they're running boots, but then some orc wizard hits you with a slow and your boots turn off? Seems a bit overly complicated.

My issue with this (other than breaking autoexplore) is that kiting becomes all that much more strong. If you have any corridors (basically 80% of floors) you can now make anything fall at least 3 turns behind you so they can't get close to you to follow you up stairs. The running ego already does this fairly well on its own but now you can also kite even fast monsters if they aren't willing to dive into fire. If they follow you through flames, after a few turns in a corridor you could basically kill anything with the fire damage alone.

And if you aren't abusing this with kiting, then flame clouds behind you don't actually do anything.
