so i'm compiling a big list of free (as in beer) games

post free games you like

to be included in the list the games MUST meet these criteria:
1. officially released for free (not just abandonware)
2. involve absolutely no purchases of any kind, including DLC and expansions
3. not bundled with garbage or advertisements
4. be good, and of interest to more than a hyper-specialized audience, or at least historically relevant

games already on it: an untitled story, la-mulana (original), iji, cave story (original), within a deep forest, logi-gun (with a hyphen!), knytt stories, maldita castilla (original), spelunky (original), bio menace, jetpack, jumper two, jumper three, nelly cootalot, the apprentice (tentatively), the terrific menace of the invaders from audiogalaxy, beneath a steel sky, king's quest 2: romancing the stones, a tale of two kingdoms, zork, a bunch of neutral's room escape games, hyper princess pitch, hero core, warning forever, clean asia, chalk, echoes, sport utility assault vehicle extreme, command & conquer (& red alert), spring rts, battle for wesnoth, hedgewars, gemcraft: labyrinth, sumotori dreams, rogue, nethack, dcss, powder

if you post something that violates 2. or 3. i will spawn with a rapier of distortion in your next game

DotA 2 almost counts! There's no gameplay gated behind money, at least.

Should the game be officially released (1.xx)? I hope not, you have dcss in the list. Then http://demon.ferretdev.org/, completely playable.

the game can be unfinished if it's still fun enough to play (I have Spring RTSes and Hedgewars on there after all). not going to include demos or anything like that, though

Most of these are free. They can be looked up with a pinch more effort than I was willing to put in.

Caves of Qud. A post-apocalyptic style roguelike. You do have to pay to get it in tiles format, but that shouldn't be an overwhelming problem around here.

Completely free, non-random battles (no longer you will see peasants killing tanks, also AI tactics is quite smart due to that), unlimited custom units which cost research to prototype, multiple AI types etc.
