Oh !@#$ moments

This just happened so I though it might be fun to do a thread of oh !@#$ moments.

  Code:
Antaeus, Guardian of Cocytus comes into view. He is wielding the +14 obsidian axe {chop, +Fly SInv
 *Curse}.

This may actually be a blessing in disguise, if mesmerize affects him. I'm wearing boots of running and have rElec and rC+++, so if that's true I can basically lead him around on a leash and ninja the rune even easier than normal.

Of course, I'm playing a ghoul with max unarmed, armor and dodging, so I just might be cocky enough to tell him to bring it.
Edit:
  Code:
Antaeus hits you with the cursed +14 obsidian axe {chop, +Fly SInv *Curse}!!!

Yeah, ok, NOPE.

You have a +3 broad axe of electrocution, and find a Hydra on L:2. Thinking you can out-damage his head-spawning, you take a few swings, and realize you aren't doing enough damage.

Sooo... you berserk, and with new confidence, continue your hydra decapitation-fest. But after a few more swings, and 18 heads, you realize that not only are you not doing enough damage, that your zerk is going to run out in a couple turns, and you're now at 20% HP.

One of my very first characters to make it to Lair was a Halfling melee dude with a sweet artifact short sword. It turned out that this was the last version in which short swords chopped hydra heads, but I had no idea what was happening and then I died.

Those moments when you just found about five neat, should be very useful items all bunched together...

And before you get a chance to train any one of them or even get used to the idea that you have them to use, you also get some of the nastiest stuff on that floor all clumped right together blasting the heck out of you.

When you just started your run 10 minutes ago and auto-explore leads you right into 5 enemies WAY too strong for you to fight. They aren't asleep either, and there is no chance of getting away, as you have no means of teleportation, blinking, or fighting them! I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST YOU AUTO-EXPLORE!

Tell me it was at least something relatively mild, and not some furry lolicon futanari guro gangrape that would make them call an exorcist/psycologist

For what it's worth, if you mean just started on D:1... I think that's more of a D:1 problem usually. Usually by D:3-5, you have some selection of scrolls and potions, and the odd clump of meanies won't be able to trap you quite as effectively so often.

When I watch videos like this it really makes me think about how different discussion about DCSS development might be without online statistics and the idea of streaking existing.

I have had worse... during the tourney, specially.
  Code:
     2 | D:1      | You fall through a shaft!

The idea that new players should get used to mindlessly tab through the first x games until rng gives in being better than balancing difficulty amuses me. I have tried to get friends to play roguelikes(specially DCSS), but failed due to the hostile game start. You can tell them to pick a easy combo and do basic key presses but that doesnt look fun, or you can spend 5 minutes explaining hotkeys, how to cast spells and how to avoid danger just so you can watch them die 5 seconds later, to which all you can say is "rinse and repeat until you get tot the good part of the game!".
If the start of the game was so easy that the chances of dying was invisible at least you would have the idea of progression, instead of repetition.

I watched over a minute of that video and realized that I will never have the patience to streak this game, if it requires that long to deal with any given decision.

It does not. Some guys like to spend time making decisions about 0.2% chance of dying vs 0.3% chance of dying.

I've got 3 streaks of three and 6 of two even though I've always played 'normally' (used autoexplore, taken stupid risks etc.). So streaks can happen by accident. Just don't pick CK if you want to streak :)

What I wondered about that video is why he didn't always rest to full MP before continuing exploring.

What is an "oh the player is standing between a potion and a grate with some gold behind it" moment?

It's shorthand. The long version is "oh !@#$%^&*()".

Also known as an "oh the player is standing between a potion and a grate, some gold, a bread ration, a zot trap, Cerbov, an orb of fire, 15 bolts and a -5 arbalest" moment.
