What's the point of playing crawl?

What's the point of playing crawl? Is it just a time killer like tetris?
I accidentally noticed that I won an OpFi of Qazlal with 15 runes without any transmutations or conjurations but I don't remember any details despite it probably was a very hard game. I even forgot that I played that combo and it was less than 2 years ago :(

What are time killers and what are not?
If you're defining time killer as something that doesn't help you to earn more money, then Crawl would fall into there.

For me time killer is a game which I forget in 5 minutes after it's over, it has no events worth remembering.

To keep your mind occupied thus preventing you from contemplating the utter depths of your loneliness in the world and keeping you from having to face the boundless horror of human existence.

Why every game i play there are people around me having existentialism crisis? Go stare at the sky for the whole day if that makes you feel more accomplished by the end of it.

If you're worried that playing crawl is a waste of time, you're going to be horrified when you think about what posting on Tavern is.

That's an interesting perspective; couldn't you argue that trying to communicate with one's fellow beings (however futile such efforts occasionally seem around here) is at least potentially more worthwhile than sitting in solitude while performing more or less repetitive actions at a computer?

Posting in the tavern is a more or less repetitive action ;)

Other Taverns posters are (at least in theory) capable of providing some sort of intellectually stimulating exchange or even, dare I say it, maybe even a sense of shared humanity and understanding, while computer games rarely engage beyond a momentary distraction. Of course, neither will ultimately fill the void of the human soul, but I'm still inclined to value one as a more noble thing to strive for; in the words of Meek Mill: "It's levels to this shit".

To see more zany combinations of things, get that rush of thinking you might win far too soon (oops, splat!), and occasionally surprise yourself by doing something new that works without thinking much about it.

I also quite like the general exploration and fantasy theme. It's a bit like playing an MMO without all the hassle of dealing with super high tech and constant people pressure (occasional forum crazy aside hehe).

And for something played on a bunch of squares with tiny icons, the visuals are actually fairly amusing too. 8-)
(Of course if you can "read" ASCII version, you might say they're fun to interpret rather than simply view or something, I dunno.)

The long-winded run-on sentences that read like they got copy-pasted from some depressing Cioran text.

I would've thought that concluding my post by linking to a Meek Mill song would indicate that I'm not exactly writing from a point of despair. Though if I were actually embroiled in such a crisis, surely your sarcastic and dismissive post would not be a productive way to respond? :P

Lol. My first existential crisis was much earlier than at age 40 and much weaker.

I thought your post was good Dioneo. Nevermind these Philistines.

I realize that my entire life has been an attempt to be a sort of ghost, a passive quiet entranced outlet through which my inner sorrow and loneliness can pass without causing me more pain than is necessary. I want to shut myself off, be no one and feel nothing. Let the waves of pain flow through me without touching. Nothing can touch me, neither past present nor future, because I am simply not here. I feel neither pleasure nor pain. Thats what crawl means to me.

This reminds me of the lyrics to the song Coma, specifically this part:

Nothing
(Nothing)
Now that I have nothing
(Now that I have nothing)
I resolve to be nothing
(I resolve to be nothing)
Nothing to harm me, nothing to gain

It's actually a really good song, from buckethead, has some background vocals from serj (of system of a down), and the main singer is apparently Azam Ali, who I don't know from anywhere else but she's great on this song.

Is there a difference? We cannot know whether or not the Tavern is a Chinese Room experiment, as espoused by Searle and later Dennett. Tavern responses to our own posts could just be assembled by automatons with no real understanding, and thus all of our interaction on here is purely illusory.
