"bararchians" could totally just be elves

"bararchians" could totally just be elves

4th edition Dungeons and Dragons tried to deal with high elves by giving them a limited teleport ability and a silly made-up name, and reflavoring them to be more like fairies. Now Crawl is trying to deal with high elves by giving them a limited teleport ability and a silly made-up name, and reflavoring them to be more like frogs.

Neither is perhaps ideal but I prefer the former. While "barachian" is a better name than "eladrin," if I were to play a member of a wimpy-but-teleporting species in a CRPG I'd rather play one that looked and acted like David Bowie in Labyrinth than a weird barbaric frog-elf with "grossly overmuscled legs." Crawl has too many monstrous species as it is.

Throw us a bone and call the New High Elves "sidhe" or "mist elves" or something; if they have to move slowly, say it's because they wouldn't look as cool if they ran.

If we gotta do frogs, Anuran is a better name IMO. It's the same etymology but sounds nicer.

Fair enough and I take your point but when you think about it like every frog in fairy tales or video games actually is a reskin of a prince or knight or the like.

"Anura" is the Greek for "tailless", which would describe most of the game's species, and is an explicitly taxonomical term. "Batrachos" is the actual Greek word for "frog". I think PF removed the "t" so it didn't start with the word "bat", and also because "barach" happens to be Biblical Hebrew for "to escape" or "to flee".

Anura is indeed the name for the subclass of Amphibia frogs and toads, so my etymology was indeed taxonomical. Along those lines, batrachos is the root for the various frog families taxonomically, FWIW. But I do like the Hebrew pun.

It's also phonetically similar to a word for useless crap in Russian/Ukrainian/Polish. Who'd figure.

Soon, soon.

Yeah, Sidhe would be cool. They could be slow elves with better magical apts or something, since the other slow race is good at, uh. Nothing.
