Name Generator I made

I like to have characters with unique names since it feels more exciting, but the ones randomly generated by the game feel more like random strings than appropriate names for the species/background combination, so in my spare time (ie while procrastinating on finals) I've been coding up a Python program to generate cool/silly names for my characters!

Code is here: http://pastebin.com/yRZBitZt, you need it in the same folder as http://pastebin.com/tRiEZpV1 and http://pastebin.com/iDtHTMXU

Some example names from the program:

If anyone's curious the name origins for the different species:
Spoiler: show
  • Humans/Halflings/Demigods: Generic human names from a variety of sources
  • Elves" Scandinavian Mythology
  • Centaurs/Merfolk: Greek mythology
  • Deep Dwarf: Norse dwarven names
  • Demonspawn: Biblical demons, latin names for the seven deadly sins
  • Draconian: Chinese mythology (cause why the hell not)
  • Felid: Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
  • Formicid: Aztec Mythology (inspired by the name of Ixhuachatetl)
  • Gargoyle: Sumerian Mythology (cause they old as heck)
  • Ghoul: Arabian nights
  • Hill Orc: Names from Dungeon Crawl (used for Beogh's followers)
  • Kobolds/Trolls: Goblin names from Pathfinder and some I made up
  • Mummy: Pharoahs
  • Naga: Hindu mythology
  • Octopode: Lovecraft
  • Ogre: Hebrew Mythology (yeah pretty random)
  • Spriggan: Celtic mythology
  • Tengu: Edo-era Japanese warlords
  • Vampire: Romanian Mythology
  • Vine Stalker: Hallucinogenic and poisonous plants

What's wrong with Pathfinder? Is it sexist or something?

The OP lists a bunch of sources that are old enough to fit in the Crawl universe (aside from felids, which themselves don't really fit anyway), and then suddenly it uses another RPG that Crawl predates by a decade

Well just for you I edited the species file, trolls and kobolds now use wholly original names generated to be similar to Snorg and Purgy. Don't say I never did anything for you. :D

This just leaves Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, but it doesn't actually directly crib names from it so much as generate names that are similar to names from the book. Also, it was published in 1939 by T. S. Eliot, who died in 1965; definitely newer than any other source on the list but it's not really a modern work.

Pathfinder goblin names were somewhat of a holdover from earlier versions when I didn't really intend to show anyone this. Notably, Halflings, Orcs, Elves, and Dwarves all stole their names from Tolkien originally.

Give kobolds Slavic names and I'm sold. (Slavic mythology is underrated.)

What's so special about Rabisu Reddragon that made you decide to spell out his species name? Everyone else only got the two letter abbreviation.

Why does the mom on The Berenstain Bears walk around all day in a nightgown and a nightcap no matter what she's doing? Some things just defy explanation and all we can do is live our lives.
