It's been a while since I read that page; fun to come back to it now that I actually know what I'm doing in Crawl.
It has some...interesting...bits:

"most forms of magic increase hunger to the point where a ring of sustenance is a prized possession."
"It is entirely possible to abandon your god if you no longer find them useful, and/or to choose a new god. This will usually make the god you abandoned angry at you; however, it is entirely possible to survive their wrath until it runs out. Doing this with the necromancy god is an explicit part of one strategy guide for a Mummy Wizard."
"The latter is also available in form of a healing wand. More favored than potions because they cannot be destroyed, but exceedingly rare and difficult to recharge." (emphasis mine)
"The Healer class is actually pretty effective at fighting to begin with, as they begin with skill in unarmed combat."
"The infamous Sigmund can show up as early as the first floor, or as the first enemy for that matter"
"Sometimes you get a dragon hide on the first floor, sometimes you get a dragon on the first floor."

Good stuff. <3

Is there a badtropes entry yet? (There isn't. Someone get cracking!)

A lot of the examples are outdated, or slightly incorrect (or yeah, outright hyperbolic. But c'mon, it's tvtropes). But I do think the intro at the top does a pretty good and concise job of explaining what makes crawl distinct in terms of play and philosophy.

Edit: Actually, I got sucked into a reread. It's a lot more up to date than it was. (Last year they were only current to 0.5 or so).

Re: I think I found something worth checking out today.

My honest opinion of it: the intro is way too long. It is absolutely monotonous for ca. 40 seconds (the tune kicks in at 00:41), and if that was reduced to 10-15sec I would be more interested in the rest of the piece. In regards to the rest, it doesn't really manage to stand out. I don't doubt that it would be good "background noise" in a videogame or something, in other words, when the music is only part of the atmosphere but not the consumer's main interest at the time, but as a stand-alone piece it remains rather uninteresting. To improve this you need to make it more capable of capturing my attention when listening and also more memorable after I've finished listening (as in, 12 hours later I couldn't really remember anything and needed to re-listen to give critique). The tune is pretty good the first time, but remains too repetitive throughout the rest of the piece (as in, only with slight variations). This should also be fixed, 2 minutes have more potential than a drawn-out intro and then a decent tune being basically repeated 3+ times.
I know nothing of your skill level/experience of course and for a first attempt I would still regard it as well-done.

I agree that it's good background/game music, but not full-fledged crawlstep.

A great local game company have a Kickstarter on a game that combines Shaun of the Dead with Loveboat (!!!) in an iOS/PC Adventure game. Sounds fairly nutty.

and lol did elynae actually say "consumer interest".

ooops

I should have said "consumer's attention" because "interest" is probably very easy to misunderstand. I wasn't telling him to be more generic, I meant it wasn't a song I would have wanted to focus my attention on, but would rather appreciate as background music.

it's been a while but i think i mostly took offense at the use of "consumer". are we talking about radio jingles or what?
anyway, don't mind me. i think "background music" is a terrible concept and you should never aim for it. =(

i've been meditating very hard on this matter and i think my crawlstep of choice would be something like demdike stare. or maybe not.

i'd like to say that that's not "background music", but i'm not big on eno and i've never really bothered with airports. which i probably should. someday.
so i'll just say that this is coming from someone who finds "time machines" as meaningful as music gets.

Yes, and the format of the storytelling is a good one; they kind of rushed it in A Grain of Truth, but I still like both and waiting for more to come.
