Meet the Jelly, or: what if a draconian marries a felid?

Jellies cannot use or pick up items. Instead, they satiate themselves by eating items. The only items they can pick up are magic books.

Eating an item or corpse cures a jelly by XL+3 HP. When at full health, jellies can eat items to gain temporary 3-5 MP per item (no maximum, lasts 100 turns)

A jelly takes a turn to eat an item.

Jellies gain 1 AC point every two levels and start with 3.

Jellies have a melee attack inflicting acidic damage. Beside damage, acid stacks this way: -2, -4, -5 (max)

At level 12, a jelly changes into one of the following creatures:

Blue Jelly: Gain immunity to cold, cold branded melee, +2 ice magic aptitude, sprint, +20% MP
Death Ooze: Gain undead traits, drain branded attack. If you worship one of the good gods when you reach lvl 12, they will intercede and impede you from becoming a death ooze, turning you instead into one of the other two.
Acidic Blob: Gains an acid bolt ability that costs exhaustion. Also gains sprint.

Sprint: sprint is the ability to increase speed of movement for a short time. The jelly runs (speed 12) and suffers exhaustion.

The first time a jelly meets another jelly or Jiyva creature, she has the option to convert to Jiyva.

A jelly has no evocation, weapon, shields or armour skill.


This was first posted in the stupid ideas thread, but I got the impression that people like it, so it's worth some thought. Suggestions?

This feels like a felid on ... whatever the opposite of steroids is.

Here's an alternate idea, that optionally does away with eating items (tedium) and gives it a unique twist with regards to equipment:

A sort of spin on Octopodes with far fewer, but more versatile slots.

Jellies start out with 1 pseudopod that can be used to wield a weapon or wear a shield, ring, amulet, glove or hat.

At XL 7, 12 and 17, Jellies grow and gain another pseudopod. They lack coordination to wield more than 1 weapon, but can otherwise equip any number of the above items.

At XL 12, Jellies evolve into the forms as per OP, or similar.

Jellies start out with natural GDR and AC, to further differentiate them from Octopodes and make them more melee-worthy without tmut..
