Poll about mutations and heavy contaminations

I am surprised that some players find contamination fun so I am wondering how common the opinion is

I'd rather have contam than constant recasting

Do you mean you are always hasted when haste is castable?

Re: Poll about mutations and heavy contaminations

No, they're saying that if contam didn't exist, they would be, so contam is worth having. It's not exactly about whether it's "fun" or not, it's about preventing constantly having invis/haste on being the optimal thing to do.

It looks like about 20 people have voted to far, thank you, guys.
Now we can see that intentional mutations are fun and unintentional ones are not fun for most.

Re: Poll about mutations and heavy contaminations

The thing is, from potions and chunks you are much more likely to get a good mutation, than from contam. Its not really about intentional or not, for me at least.

I find it much more entertaining to deal with a permanent downside inflicted upon myself by my own poor decisions vs ones foisted on me. I would have voted for heavy contamination to also be fun if they weren't a potential result of Hell effects or Zot traps.

Pretty much. I would happily lose !cMut and leave mutation removal to the gods and pure chance when consuming the purple if it meant that the concept of (permanent) mutations as an attack on the player were removed. I know that probably won't happen (even if it did, the rest of the mutation system would likely get removed along with it), but I can dream.

If there was a monster that would give you like 50% good and 50% random mutation I'd also call it "fun".

I would also accept purple being 100% random, with only Xom/Jiyva/benemut using any other weighting.

Re: Poll about mutations and heavy contaminations

In fact, I've never understood why all this mutation nonsense has to be in the game. It is probably meant to be fun, but in practice it is annoying and unfun. Crawl would be much better off without all this shit.

As an aside, why is it called "mutation"? That's another thing that makes no sense. If suddenly a horn grows on your head, that is not a mutation, that is magic.

Except the players keep asking for the game to be made harder, so they don't want to be more powerful relative to the dungeon, they just don't want to go backward in power level.

Also some bad mutations make game more annoying, all those berserkitis (stay hungry), teleportitits (retreat 2 floors above to rest), stat drain (just hope you will get specific stat, I don't think anyone was switching from plate armour to a robe because of that). I treat potion of beneficial mutation as a strategic reward and always quaff it while mutation roulette is treated by me as a weird way to make the game easier and I don't understand why people don't play easier combos if they really want to have easier game (ignoring speedrunners here of course).
