Equivocrawl Brainstorm

inspired by recent hellcrawl fork and several recent deaths of strong characters due to late-game inattention, oops

i don't expect to have the time to even start figuring out how to work on this for several months, and i assume that a lot of stuff, especially map generation, will take a long time to figure out, so this is just a place to map out some ideas and goals, ask for some thoughts, and look back at it later when i have more time

EQUIVOCRAWL

very linear take on crawl, removes backtracking, stashing, luring, resting

REAL BASICS

+27 dungeon floors
+no branches
+no upstairs until orb is retrieved

MAIN STUFF

+linearity
++dungeon levels are much more linear;
+++rather than wide open dungeons to explore, level generation is modified to produce maps with spawn location at one end, and stairs at another, with 2 or 3 paths leading to stairs
++++different paths may connect at 1 or 2 points, but otherwise levels are completely linear

+portals replace branches
++most portals are already linear, and represent one-time chances to attempt to get extra resources to win the game
++if runes are not removed, they will be optional, and located in special rune portals

+themed dungeon levels also replace branches
++each dungeon level has a theme, with its own monster generation, item generation, and vault selection rules

+healing over time is removed
++healing is provided by consumables and dungeon features (fountains, friendly monsters, stuff like that, it doesn't matter what)
+++beneficial dungeon features are limited use

+monsters spawn over time from beginning of level
++player cannot lure or retreat
++player can only escape monsters by moving forward and deeper into dungeon

+orb run is more dangerous
++orb run is backwards run through all generated levels
+++linearity means limited shortcuts by digging
+++all generated levels are heavily corrupted, more demonic spawns

a lot of tweaks to religion, spells, xp, skills, and items follow from this basic structure but well those are the basics. i hope to one day follow the example of my hero hellmonk and make equivocrawl. thank you

Man, it was implemented many years ago: sprints.

last time i suggested this someone literally said "just play linecrawl"
