Crawlprayer

Our RNGod, who art in Code,
Hallowed be Thy maps,
Thy artifacts come,
Thy dice be rolled in Vaults,
As they art in Shoals.
Give us this day our Poison Arrow,
And forgive us our YASDs,
As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

(Heavily inspired by Doomprayer from DoomRL here :)
... and forgive us our YASDs,
As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

Nice.

"Art" in the fifth line should be "are". "Art" is the second person singular.

thou art
they are

Sir, your talents and knowledge are wasted here.

Alternatively:
Sir, I can think of no better use for your talents than correcting grammatical errors in earlier forms of English on the DCSS message board.

If I had a job I'm sure that that and not a forum for an obscure computer game would be filling my days.

"obscure but brilliant", surely?

I wish you luck in your search for better remunerated, though perhaps ultimately less worthy, employment.

hahaha awesome Zicher!

I don't think of myself a religious man, but that prayer was being shouted to the high heavens earlier today trying to avoid 2 elf annihilators.

Also, in terms of correcting 'olde' English, are we going to start correcting Shakespeare as he had no consistent spelling?

Yes. I think I can say, with some confidence, that we occupy the cultural high ground here.

Can't blame you there. I'd have a lot more time for Crawl if I didn't have to turn up in an office most days, working stiff that I am.

It's my big fat mortgage that's the problem. That and the need to buy clothes and food and things for my kids. No wonder I suck at DCSS.

Not at all. Your prayer focused our attention on the broader spiritual and societal context of DCSS, upon which we are now communally reflecting.

Wasn't that your intention?

Re: Crawlprayer

Makes me wonder if we can make a prayer to every Crawl god :).

First try:

Our Trog, who art on D:2,
Hallowed be Thy rage,
Thy corpses come,
Thy berserk be in stable,
As it is in trunk.
Give us today our +7,+11 katana of electrocution,
And forgive us our spellcasting,
As we forgive our orc wizards.
And lead us not into renouncing you for the endgame,
But deliver us from Nessos,
For thine is the Roguelike,
The Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

Feel free to take another shot! :)

Yep ! I though about it some days ago. For the long description of an altar a prayer or hymn to each god is displayed. They should be of different styles rather than joke-adaptations of the Christian prayer, mostly based on ancient religions.

Ok, Grimm. I'm going to gather some ancient prayers from different civilizations spread in the Internet. Then I'll adapt in some sense for a first version. I'm short of time until August however.

Awesome idea!

Perhaps, the good gods (TSO, Zin and Ely) could still benefit from Christian prayers. Berserker rage is linked with Viking gods, especially Odin. Makhleb, perhaps, could be linked with Lovecraftian novels, so may be Yred or Kiku, as the evil gods (but from my limited knowledge of Lovecraft's work, I don't recall any prayers there). I even think that a nameless, shapeless horror theme of Lovecraft would suit Jiyva as well.
Maybe this brings some inspiration, if the Taskforce would take this seriously.

Maybe, we might add a wow of behavior, instead of the prayer, when joining a god. For inspiration, here's the text of Viking-related The Warrior's Prayer (by a heavy-metal band Manowar):

Manowar wrote:Gods of War, I call you. My sword is by my side.
I seek a life of honor, free from all false pride.
I will crack the whip with a bold mighty hail.
Cover me with death if I should ever fail.

Glory, Majesty, Unity
Hail! Hail! Hail!

Here, "God of War" would suit Okawaru, but the text itself would IMHO fit more to TSO.

Again, Roderic, thanks for the great idea!

It's grammar and not spelling that is at issue. Shakespeare's grammar is of the first water.
