Race proposal: Anubis

Flavour:

Half jackal hybrids trained in the arts of war to protect their mummy masters. A few have escaped servitude while others seek the Orb for the greater glory of mummy kind. Higher level anubis are able to withstand extreme pain and necromantic effects, and detect invisible intruders. Anubis are proficient in fighting with their claws, teeth, and staves, and are particularly suited to performing the rites of their gods. However, they are vulnerable to holy effects.

Aptitudes:

Fighting: +1
Dodging: +1
Staves: +1
Unarmed: +1
All other weapon skills: 0
Armour: -1
Necromancy: +2
Invocations: +3
Transmutation: +1 (hybrid race advantage)
All other magic: -1
Evocations: 0
Stealth: 0
XP: -1

Mutations and Resistances:

Lvl0: carnivorous 3, rHoly-, shaggy fur 1, claws 1, fangs 1 (and auxiliary bites have a 33% chance to inflict draining)
Lvl5: rN+
Lvl10: rN++
Lvl15: rN+++, immune to XP drain
Lvl20: rTorm

Attributes:

8 STR, 8 DEX, 8 INT
+1 STR or DEX every 4th level
+3 MR per level
Average HP and MP

Preferred Backgrounds:

Warriors: Fighter, Monk
Zealots: Berserker (cause carnivorous)
Warrior-mage: Transmuter
Mage: Necromancer

Why This Race:

Allow players to gradually assume most of the perks of being undead without the innate disadvantages (other than rHoly). A beast race that's a less cheesy version of felids.

It is too similar to Ghoul IMHO
Underestimated: cleaving, Deep Elf, Formicid, Vehumet, EV
Overestimated: AC, GDS

Is DCSS trying to set a record for largest number of religions misrepresented?

Is Gozag L Ron Hubbard, Joel Osteen or some unholy spawn of them both?

Re: Race proposal: Anubis

...So it's the opposite of a Vampire (Immune to Torm and Dispel Undead at once, instead of Vulnerable to both).

Early/Mid Game this race sounds fairly strong, but pretty boring comparable to Hu, primarily. (boring fairly average apts only particularly good at Necro and Transmutations/Unarmed). Late Game extended, with rTorm and not being undead for Dispel immune...it might be borderline OP.

That said, I don't think a race that's pretty boring UNTIL EXTENDED, then very powerful in extended has much of a leg to stand on, it's like TSO, the race.
I'm beginning to feel like a Cat God! Felid streaks: {FeVM^Sif Muna, FeWn^Dithmenos, FeAr^Pakellas}, {FeEE^Ashenzari, FeEn^Gozag, FeNe^Sif Muna, FeAE^Vehumet...(ongoing)}

Are you pretending like either of those statements aren't true? =)

If it was just boring until extended, like Hu, would it be better? Srs question.

It's apts. are pretty boring/average, but it's weaker than Human significantly for most the game, TBH.

Hu have 1! XP, where this race has -1, that's the biggest difference. It doesn't really deserve the -1 either; almost everything else in that category is pretty high on the power ladder with passives/apts. (Mi, Tr, HE, Sp, Ce, Fe, etc.)

+3! Invo gives it a minor niche/uniqueness to early game, but it's shared with HO.

All other magic being -1 instead of 0 would hurt being more magically versatile slightly. Fighting/Dodging at +1 helps with defenses, slightly. (Apts. Near 0 make very slight differences unless there are A LOT of them, like Mu, Dg vastly preventing being that versatile at all).

Away from extended, where Torment is common; it's basically a slightly weaker Human, the XP apt being the biggest difference.

The Auxiliaries make up a little, but not much...Ironically Carnivorous 3 makes for a huge trade-off in extended as if a heavy caster, permafood is much rarer and much of extended has a lot of completely chunkless and chunk rare areas.

[There I did an analysis.]

Given that half of ancient Egyptian religion was about developing new cheat codes for a good afterlife, I'm pretty sure they would have enslaved their gods if they could.

How's this species a less cheesy version of felids when it doesn't have fast movespeed, or multiple lives, or no body armor, or anything that defines felids?

Re: Race proposal: Anubis

i think you'll find that carnivore 3 and shaggy fur 1 are the defining traits of felids, actually.

I think OP meant, "This is a beast species, like felids. But unlike felids, this species is not cheesy." The only point of comparison with felid was the beast-related flavor. That's the only way I can make sense of it, though even then, a jackal-humanoid hybrid would seem to invite comparisons to tengu, formicid, centaur, etc. before felid.
