Correct me if I'm wrong, but usually it's a good idea to buy scrolls of acquirement and get the gold, there's a profit there, right?

Sure, you'll
probably get more money than the scroll costs. In any case, you should only acquire gold if there's currently something for sale that you want but can't afford.
