Been gone a long time...

...but the continuing Trunk updates on the blog eventually dragged me back.

I'm not even sure what the last version I played was, but sometime in 2013 maybe? Anyway, had not been playing much for a long time before that.

Anyway, I like what you've done with the place. I fired up a random character and got DSMo and have been running around kicking tyres.

New Gods: awesome. Picked Qazlal and have been having a ball.
New monsters: interesting!
Removed monsters: I miss some of them, but not many. Cyclopes are gone?
Shorter branches: hooray! But... Depths?
Many many new tiles: I guess?
Lots of fairness tweaks: puzzlement. But mostly seem positive.

Things...

Disaster Area at 27 Invocations is a hilarious panic button (though Upheaval at the same Inv feels crappy given piety cost). Victims so far: Xtahua, Mara, Mennas, assorted other uniques that were hanging out with them, the Vaults reception committee, vast mobs in Zot.

(Foo) of Heal Wounds are now super rare?

The total lack of rMut, how does it get balanced? I visited the Abyss (which seems way easier to escape, even without the rune, so thanks for that) a couple of times and both times came out in funny shapes. That and the lack of SustAb makes me have the Fear about facing Mnoleg.

Ditto acid, the Slimy Rune seems like it's going to be tough.

Welcome back! Cyclopes are still in, you should see some in Shoals and Vaults at least. Heal wounds should be about as common as before, it's probably just clustering illusion (some wands have been purged so maybe the wand is even more common now). You don't need rMut because 1) you are supposed to control your LOS against mutators, 2) you only face OoFs when you are about to win, 3) Mnoleg gets to mutate you but then you quaff your curemut potions.

All in all, the game is better than when you left :)

I too have been out of the game for about three years and the new versions (18 and the 19 changes in trunk) are outstanding and I'm loving it again. Would also love to contribute as a non-coder (not in C++ anyway, though I have script experience) in building cells and content!

Agreed, I think the changes are definitely good and it's a better game now. Item destruction and corrosion going away is worth the effort of coming back on their own. Actually just not having to stash vital potions and scrolls alone... so great. I must have missed the Cyclopes in Shoals.

Sprucery: makes sense about "not needing" rMut. I've never been that good at LOS control (especially not in the Abyss), time to get better.

Also: I didn't realise Wretched Stars' mutations were temporary at first. Now I think they're a great addition :oops: (actually the whole newskool Abyss thing is really cool, and far less unfun).

Now pottering around Tartarus (score another zillion kills for Disaster Area in the Vestibule). And must reiterate how happy I am about the shrinking of the branches. Seven levels of Elf was too many; five also. Three including Hall of Blades (that was a surprise!) is entirely fine.

This is a lie people tell themselves so they don't cry to sleep every night.
"use better malmute avoidance tactics" is the only advice they'll give for how to avoid being malmutated.

As someone who plays Ds almost exclusively, and who also deep-throats mutpots, I do not agree with the removal of rMut.

I think overall, the game is getting better, but there have been some things added recently (6months - 1 year) that I think are extremely questionable, if not downright dumb.
Caustic Shrikes, Iron Giants, Entropy Weavers, *Fragile ego, the removal of rMut & Clarity, and the amulet changes are all things that I think were done to the detriment of the game as a whole.
Square LoS, shorter branches (except Orc!), missile brands, and wand simplification are all things that have really improved the game. Item destruction removal has been a total game changer!
So its a mixed bag, but mostly for the good :)

Caustic shrikes are cool and good. One of the best new monsters imo. Totally agree that iron giants are dumb though.

Iron giants are hilarious. All my "melee" characters going for 15 runes (so, all of them) start learning some Evo in Hells to overwhelm them with spiders/beasts, because fuck actually meleeing them.

I'm not trying to play perfectly, and I have no idea what has changed with skills and so on so it's very much guesswork. I got some nice DS mutations that synergised nicely with Qazlal, I think. Blood armour and foul miasma plus storms and polearms make this character a decent kiting tank. I have a lot of kills with a scythe because I found a really cool randart, before reluctantly abandoning it in favour of the demon tridents. Currently improving Evo because there's a Rod of Clouds somewhere and I quite like the idea of trying to make more elementals.

Not sure how deep I intend to go on this run into Tartarus, though it's fairly nonthreatening so far. There's a ring of corrosion resistance in a shop in Vaults that I might go and buy to do Slime with before I start going for the serious postgame runes.

It's just that Qazlal's "constantly making sound" conduct is pretty harsh right now and could stand to be toned down. Otherwise it's a good god.

I don't understand why Pak and other god removal is even a thing (other than disable / redesign) cause one or some are "good" or "not good"...... GAME DESIGN is all about adding options and if it doesn't break the game and people find as valid options they can utilize.... the rest becomes dictatorial design.

I don't know, gozag is pretty good. I was really down on him at first, but he's improved a bit, and the no chunks conduct really isn't as bad as it sounds.

My last gozag game featured me bribing vaults 5 (hilarious), and bribing my way through all of zot (12000 gold all told). On top of that I funded a number of shops, some of them having useful things like EA, EW, brand weapon, etc...

It was my easiest vault 5 clear and my easier zot clear that I can remember.

Since a while back the "Less is more" virus infected the Devs and they have been removing things which, while didn't necessarily add anything unique to the game, gave options and flavor. The melee Dwarves, for instance, got yanked god knows why...

Gozag is very, very good, and solid. At any point in game, except when you lack money for a potion petition.

Also did the same thing, and got my 3R run finished @ XL24 just because I was bored. Since the random was on my side, I didn't even needed gear from the shops, and I hadn't even funded a single shop, as far as I can remember.
Wasted about 9k gold on everything. It was definatelly fun to watch OoF blasting their former allies.

No, game design is fundamentally about imposing limitations on a player. In almost every aspect. It's just a question of how.
If you're making a simple platformer-first, you make the player character affected by gravity, who walks and jumps. This is a limitation-or rather, a combination of several limitations. These are obviously the groundwork of a game but when you're talking about game design in the most literal sense, it's about putting 'walls' around a player. If you open gamemaker or whatever and just make an open space and give the player movement, they have unlimited options... but it doesn't matter, because it's all meaningless. When you put the walls around them to constrain their movement and make a room, or a maze, or a level, things become much more interesting, because now it has direction and purpose. The same is true of the design space taken up by abilities, spells, gods... there's obvious novelty appeal to just 'having more things', but the strength of a game's design comes from what is chosen to be excluded.

Things got a little hairy on Tartarus:7 so I went and got the Slimy rune. A couple of Shining Eyes got me pretty good as I was in the open though... I am so conflicted now:

You tend to lose your temper in combat.
You can translocate small distances at will.
You are clumsy. (Dex -2)
Your magical capacity is low. (-10% MP)
You are somewhat resistant to further mutation.
You expend magic power (3 MP) to strengthen your wands.

On balance I don't think I can tolerate the Berserkitis, but... hmm. Blinking and rMut are pretty great.

I take it back, after the initial novelty (hey, this is different!) the Abyss is still extremely annoying if you're actually trying to get the Rune. I guess not everything changes :P

Did you go to A:3? Personally, I feel like I typically find the abyssal rune in a decent time (around 1k-2k turns for the whole Abyss trip), but of course the Abyss experience is quite subjective, and sometimes you can be very unlucky.

Funny you should mention Iron Giants, I just died in Dis with 7 runes :(

Iron Giants and Juggernauts are OK - my death was 100% stupidity - the shrikes, the flayed ghosts, and all the corroders in general I could happily never see again.

I don't mind the new dangerous and deadly monsters, but maybe that's just because I'm pretty experienced and know how to deal with things in general. I've melee'd down several iron giants, just because I tend to overbuild statue form characters with 300+ hp and huge armor. If I take a bad throw and lose half my life, I can always teleport. But you do definitely need absurd stats to do that, and even with absurd stats, it's probably still not a good plan :)

I don't mind the removal of rMut as much as I thought I would, and it should be mentioned that potions of cure mutation have become significantly more common. But it's still an issue if you're doing extended, and I wouldn't mind if the list of mutators got a bit smaller (nexoqec's are just too common, but the rest of mutators are probably fine). But even with nexoqecs, it usually isn't too bad. If you do go to Mnoleg's floor and get some mutations, I recommend carving up every ugly thing and eatting the chunks, there's some chance that you'll end up with a good set. And if you dont', you just replaced your initial 7 bad mutations with a new set of 9 random mutations, which is probably still about 3 cure mutation potions to solve. And it's fun!
