FFV is actually good though. the class system is legit and there's all sorts of weird ways you can deal with bosses, FFV fiesta is fun if you've never done it before

Final Fantasy ratings continued:

Good: Final Fantasy Adventure, Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 (didn't play 3, heard it's good), Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger
Not that good, maybe worth playing once, but amazing soundtrack: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
What the fuck: Secret of Evermore

Edit: Super Mario RPG is a top tier Final Fantasy

The FF6: Beyond Chaos randomizer/romhack device is fun. Shuffles almost everything in the game to make it feel somewhat roguelike.

S'mo' good, free PC games (I know like a million of these, throw out some wanted genres and I'll post more):
Cave Story (action/platformer)
Middens (RPG)
Murder Dog IV: Trial of the Murder Dog (there's a trial and it has Murder Dog in it)
Enviro-Bear 2000 (bear driving a car simulator)
Space Funeral (RPG)
Zineth (awesome 3D rollerblading parkour with time reversal)
Round 42 (shoot-'em-up, this's the DOS version emulated online)
The Drop (rogue-lite/RPG)
BZFlag (3D tank fightin's)
Liberal Crime Squad (Rogue-lite political adventure thing)
Frog Fractions (learn about ???????)
Gun Godz (3D FPS, Nuclear Throne's grandpappy)
Sonny 2 (RPG, pretty advanced given it's old and made in Flash)
Can You Jump It? 3D (c'mon, just try this one)

I can't believe I found another thecatamites fan out in the wild.

These are free and excellent, everyone play them.

Also play "Goblet Grotto", a game that thecatamites and a friend of his made because of playing DCSS and not really knowing what the hell was going on and making something to emulate that sorta weird feeling you have in a roguelike when you don't understand anything about the game yet. (I remember an interview with him where he was talking about how for a while he played DCSS in his off time, not really paying too much attention or bothering to try that hard, just sorta doing whatever and dying in amusing ways, and he liked to feeling of an environment you don't understand that's super hostile towards you, and how he was just by 'why not' habit falling into sacrificing corpses to gods and stuff like that)

I'd also reccomend The Longest Journey series, now that it's finished and there are no cliffhangers you'd have to wait 10 years to be resolved(at lest I hope so, I still haven't played through the last chapter of Dreamfall: Chapters...)(second game, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, ends on the most frustrating cliffhanger ever!).
I also had lots of fun playing Borderlands 2.

IVAN.

It's a roguelike. It also suffers from a lot of the typical roguelike problems that Crawl tried to get rid of: spoilery mechanics, some grindiness and such. But it's hilarious, kind of campy, and actually challenging. And you can just do/have done to you insane stuff in it that will make it a memorable experience.

Other than that, some good games I've played recently, of various genres:

Life is Strange
Papers, Please
This War of Mine
Tropico 4 (get it on sale if you like city-builders - at this point you can probably get all the DLCs and the expansion in a cheap bundle)
Underrail
Age of Decadence (if you liked Underrail and care a lot about the story - the game mechanics are significantly inferior to those of Underrail IMO)
And some classics: Gothic and Gothic 2: Night of the Raven. Can't possibly miss these two.

I was sold on those stupid witcher games for their "Deep combat".

I guess two attack buttons, each which perform one randomly selected attack from a bunch of completely different attacks (Some lunging, some quick, some very slow) is what passes for deep combat to some people... And sometimes you'd get the same attack when you pushed the other button!

The combat strategy in the witcher 2 boiled down to "Cast the shield spell, hit the guys, cast the shield spell, repeat".

I'm mad I got tricked into buying that game...

If we are talking about witcher 1 yes, combat system sucks there, since you basically only have to press 1 button to attack. But it's not whats important in the game for me. Also combat animations were amazing for the year it came out — you know, all those acrobatics that Geralt does (it still looks very good even today when motion capture is everywhere).

They really shit the bed with Prophecy league though, and from the most recent blog post they're about to shit the bed on the next challenge league too.
Everyone is going to be playing the expansion in standard league b/c of it.
They struck gold with the Cadiro/Perandus league, which I'm sure isn't helping. If the next league were coming immediately after say.... Warbands, I'm sure it would have a better welcome.
Just to put things in perspective, I'm another one of those that'll easily log 40+ hrs a week the first month that a new league is out.

Totally agree.
Prophecy was a total bummer. Backtracking and constant removal of trash propecies killed that league for me. And those untested loading "features" were a total dissaster.
I'm planning to play in SC next league because of those ridiculous endgame bosses. Because I don't want to play as another Champion. No way.
Uber Lab trail traps we're already the last pushover for me. Now this.
I don't want to rip, just after I reached level 80+ because of bullshit oneshot mechanics on those. Which 100% will be present on those, from what I've seen from the trailer. And new content always makes such a trap.
Probably would've played in HC if I had time this autumn.

Well, I played dark souls quite a bit actually, and I really like it. The combat system was quite good, although I really don't demand much beyond "I want to be able to predict what my character will do before I press the button".
When people were talking about the Witcher's "deep combat" they kept comparing it to Dark souls, which is why I bought it.

In dark souls, if you know the weapons, you know what will happen when you push the button.
In witcher 2, you have no idea which of the many flashy and fancy animations will occur when you push the button. Maybe it'll be a quick slash, maybe it'll be a 360 degree jumping spinning flourish. There's two attack buttons, one called quick and one strong, or something like that, yet in practice it seemed like both buttons were pulling from the same random list of attacks.

The secret of Dark Souls combat is that at the core it's actually quite simple-just basic timing stuff(timing rolls/parries as enemy attack comes out, not committing to your own attack if it'll take too long). But that's not a bad thing.

I played a lot of the first game, did not enjoy a second of it, only wanted to use the save for the second game. never finished. then I tried the second game. did not get into it as well. then I tried the third game, I mean, three times is the charm right? nope, something bugs me, I just can't have fun while playing it. on the other hand, I'm not having fun with dark souls 3 as well, and I LOVED the first two games. maybe I'm just burned up with gaming after two years of hikikomori lifestyle.

i wouldn't say i don't like it -- FFIV is probably my favorite video game ever*, so being a bad knock-off of that is actually quite a compliment. it's just that so far, V seems to lack the emotional punch and gameplay "wow" moments of IV, but is otherwise the same basic setup (towns-have-elemental-crystals, bad-guy-wants-crystals, run-from-one-crystal-to-the-next-but-always-get-there-just-too-late), so i'm feeling underwhelmed.

*
Spoiler: show
to be fair, it's the first jRPG and first story-driven video game i remember playing, and i was 12 at the time it came out, so there's a gigaton of nostalgia value coloring this opinion; but i've also replayed it as an adult and considering the limitations of the platform, the storytelling it is just phenomenal**. plus it pulled some graphical tricks that really defied the limits of pre-FX-chip SNES, and made the world feel deep (literally).

**
Spoiler: show
seriously, the emotional stakes just don't compare at all. IV has such depth to the relationships that develop between various pairs of characters -- some of which were already deep and in motion before the game even began and only evolve from there, others which are built through plot points and conversations that provoke reactions between their personalities which in turn affect future plot points, and so on. but in V the main characters are all complete strangers at the start of the game, and even though each of them is developing an individual emotional arc as their backstories are revealed, they all know each other equally well and only interact in a group context, so there isn't a sense that unique dynamics are evolving between any two of them.

it's interesting how this relative blandness of the characters is mirrored by the job system in V. basically it tricks the player into thinking the gameplay is "deep" when really the complete freedom to customize detracts from the depth of the experience. because any of the characters can have any skillset, the game doesn't seem interested in using plot points to shake up my lineup and force me to adapt my strategy to limited skillset combos. IV does that constantly as characters -- each of whom had a unique combat role in the party -- are injured/lost/betrayed/mind-controlled/etc. at various plot points. leveraging plot and emotional stakes in parallel with gameplay challenges makes for a much more cohesive and interesting experience, IMO.

V also seems to lack a generalized sense of weirdness and silliness, which in IV came through in the dialogue, music and animations (before the series started to get "serious" and "adult" in VI and VII). don't know how else to say it: V is just...bland.

EDIT: but i'm totally gonna finish it anyway
