Nuclear Throne kicks ass and I have 500 or so hours in it. Spelunky is good.

More topically, AM2R is some quality shit if you're into Metroid

cool free (as in beer) games:
Cave Story
Iji
La-Mulana (the original one with 16 colors)
An Untitled Story (the Jumper series is great too, Jumper Two actually has my favourite physics of any platformer)
Wesnoth again

unfree games:
Psychonauts - probably my favourite game ever, just because of its amazing writing.
Undertale - I'm sure you've heard enough about this game already but it really is worth playing, it's subversive and also it creates furries
The Talos Principle - completely blindsided me, I never expected a big-budget puzzle game to actually be good and not called Portal.

i feel like an insane person, for apparently being the only person on the planet who didn't like the talos principle.

good taste otherwise though.

KOTOR2 has excellent story and dialogue... some of the same team as planescape: torment. I've played Renowned Explorers probably around 150 hours now and still enjoying it too.

Might and Magic series. That is the actual RPGs, not the pretends to be M&M Heroes series. You can get the first six games for real cheap on GOG. Old RPGs, but good ones. I'm playing 4/5 right now. (They combine into one game called World of Xeen.)

Also if you like story stuff, there's the old Quest for Glory series, also available on GOG.

Then there's Avernum and Geneforge.

Lots of stuff.

Of recent games, I've enjoyed Dark Souls series, XCOM: Enemy Unkown, Wasteland 2, Divinity: Original Sin.
DOS especially was a nice surpise. I wasn't expecting much, but the turn-based combat is fun, mostly because of elemental interactions.

If you haven't played Quest for Glory before and would like to try, there is a great, free remake of the 2nd part by AGD Interactive, to see if you like the series. It is definitely one of the better parts.

Sunless Sea (looking forward to the expansion in a couple of months got me thinking about it again), Magic Wand, Devil Daggers (I'm bad at killing demons).

Also following up on chequers' Gravity Bone recommendation, if you like it you should definitely play 30 Flights of Loving too.

Stuff mostly newer than 2010, some slightly older, in no particular order:

Dustforce DX
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
Dark Souls 1
Spelunky
Portal 1
Super Meat Boy
Antichamber
Bastion
Shovel Knight
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Super House of Dead Ninjas
Undertale
Castle in the Darkness

One Way Heroics+ is fun too, but I'm assuming most people here have played that already.

Momodora III is also good if you enjoyed Reverie, but it's shorter and less polished.

Xenonauts is okay if you enjoyed XCOM: UFO Defense, but the gameplay is less refined than the newer XCOM remakes.

There aren't any good games. DCSS is the closest, but lacks the quick time events needed to make a truly good game. I mean... remember simon? That game was awesome, and obviously needs to be integrated into all other media.

Sadly the games that used quick time events messed it up by having the rest of the game be stupid. Farenheit? Some nice simon play, but the plot was idiotic. Resident evil 4? Nice quick time stabbing, but what the hell is up with the shooting and the zombies?

You might think that means simon is a good game, but no, it requires batteries, and the plot sucks donkey balls.

Seconding the recommendations for One Way Heroics and Nuclear Throne, great fun.

Several high quality, free 16-bit-esque games (I especially recommend EFMB, Maldita, and Hydorah): https://www.locomalito.com

A few Steam recs: Crypt of the NecroDancer (isometric DDR dungeon thing), Vagante (sidescrolling roguelike), NOT A HERO (sidescroller), English Country Tune (great obscure puzzler), Diehard Dungeon (top-down Zelda-esque roguelike)

Hey, you can get No Man's Sky! 20503848573923846234895729384739248724395623947 identical planets! Plus it totally features simulations of planetary orbits, galactic orbits and drift, star orbits, you can freely travel through the entire galaxy if you want, and you can see the cool stuff other people have done on those worlds! It even has full simulation of particle physics!

Oh wait, none of those things are true. But the devs did say they were true, so that's gotta be worth something. Pity there's no quick time events...

Or you can get HyperRogue, which is 3% of the price, contains functionally-infinite multitudes of hyperbolic worlds, and has actual gameplay in it!

Witcher III was great, and it should be an affordable price in several years when you get a computer that can run it.

I'm not a huge fan of downwell on phones. I don't like the way its control scheme uses touchscreen "buttons" in a real-time game, especially one where you want to see the stuff that your thumb is covering up every time you jump.

would be better imo if it was just "the guy moves towards where you are touching on sreen, also tap screen for jump/shoot" or something

i will say this: it is good in spite, not because, of the voice acting

I've always found it weird how people use that FF10 scene as an example of how bad the voice acting is. He's supposed to be laughing in a really fake, forced way; it isn't like Baten Kaitos, where every line legitimately was read by randoms from the street.

Well the thing is the voice acting in X isn't actually THAT bad, compared to the sum whole of the dubbing world. I can think of worse games. Or at least parts of games. I'm looking at you, Kingdom Hearts Wakka.

The thing about X was that it was the very first Final Fantasy with voice acting, which means Square didn't know how/didn't care to lip sync to English the way all of their titles proceeding X would do. That's really the reason why X had any real bad voice acting at all, because being forced to match the lips of the Japanese speaking characters makes English sound particularly weird at times.

Previous games could be worse with their translations anyway. Final Fantasy VII, for instance. "This guy are sick!" And lots of other examples...

Hilariously bad translations were the only thing that made most jrpgs tolerable imo. Some of my friends and I have had good times playing Legend of Dragoon while making up voices for the ridiculous dialogue
