Consistency vs Average

How does AC affect these? Can the second one still miss or be blocked?

id use 1d100 on battles that i have high chances of losing(early elec against an early orc warrior).

i'm pretty sure either of those damage are way outside the range damage tends to fall in in crawl (ignoring AC, the second would get you !!! on every hit), so i'd be really happy with either.

in a game where AC exists even 1d80 would be better than a consistent 40

if AC didn't exist I would probably choose the consistent option.
