1 Thing you like and 1 thing you don't like

Name your favorite change that has been added to the game in the last 3 stable releases, and name your least favorite change. Lastly, name your favorite update of all time. Preferably, explain why:

Favorite:

Zig figurines and megazigs, and by extension the change to zigs having all items IDed automaticly. It adds a whole new level of enjoyment to the game and sort of revitalized the replay value for me.

Least Favorite:

Death cob nerf in .18 was a huge step backwords I thought. They suddenly went from popcorn to badass and I liked that about them.

Favorite Update:

.15, absolutely no contest. Item weight was removed, item destruction was removed, Nemelex was overhauled, monsters stopped picking up items, corpses can no longer be picked up, and much more. It was almost like every single enormous problem I had with the game disappeared in one swoop.

Favourite: square los, because circlelos abuses were awful.

Least favourite: does "misc items buff" count as something that happened in the "last 3 stable releases"? Because now every character is obligated to use allies, and it's awful.
If that doesn't count, then probably entropy weavers. Horribly designed monster. (Op crusher/iron giant throwing is worse, but was introduced in 0.14.)

Favourite version change of all time: 0.6 to 0.7. After experiencing 0.6's randomized energy I can confidently say that no other version change comes close.

Square LoS was a great change, I had completely forgot about that. Now I sort of want to change my answer lol.

Also, what was so bad about the .6 random energization?

Moving 1 square as a human and getting smited by one orc priest 2 times in return was not fun.

this is interesting, i'd like to see a list of pre-milestone versions so people can go back and try out an old mechanic if they want; here's a beginning but see if there's anything to add:

3.30 - last version before originator Linley Henzell left
4.0.0 beta 26 - latest finished version
4.1.2 Brent Ross alpha - strange and difficult version
.1 - last version without tutorial
.5 - last version with Divinations spell school, without overflow altars, last version where Swamp and Snake always generated
.6 - last version before energy randomization revamp, last version with rational aptitudes
.8 - last version before victory dancing started getting removed
.9 - last version with Hive, without innate reaching/cleaving
.10 - last version with missile enchantment
.11 - last version with plain vaults and plain abyss
.11 to .13 - last versions before major changes to summoning
.13 - last version with a 27-level Dungeon
.14 - last version with item destruction and weight and complex ID, last version before Nemelex and ranged revamps
.16 - last version with circular LOS

Holy fuck I've been playing since version .10, my god.

I remember when I first entered vaults. I was like "Oh shit, this is fucking awesome!" and then that moment when I entered vaults:8 for the first time I nearly shit my pants. I also distinctly remembering how fucking horrible vaults were after having done them more than once back when they were 8 levels of vanilla gaurd bullshit. The layout was awful too, but that first time I was so engrossed in the adventure and discovery of it I didn't care.

That wasn't half as bad as the dungeon being 27 floors, oh my god was that awful. The introduction of depths as a 5 floor seperation of the dungeon was probably the single best addition to the game, at least that I can think of. I still like the heavy removal in .15 more, but as far as added content goes, depths is top of the line.

A few more (Source):
  • 3.31beta01 — last version to require only one rune
  • 3.02 — last version without shallow water
  • 2.82 — last version where D is deeper than 27 levels
  • 2.72 — last version without gods
  • 2.61 — last version without branches
  • 2.21 — last version without races
  • 2.11 — last version without skills, vaults, and uniques
  • 1.22 — last version without permanent levels

Unfortunately, the code for most of those versions has been lost, but we do have a repository containing code for 1.1, most versions from 2.70 to 4.00b26, and 4.1.2alpha.

What did the game look like without skills and vaults? Also, what exactly does permanent levels mean?

it means that when you temporarily leave a level, the game saves it, instead of deleting it from memory and generating a new level when you come back

What's this mean?

.9 - last version with Hive, without innate reaching/cleaving

I don't play with axes often, but I think I still cleave without selecting anything, don't I?

.11 - last version with plain vaults and plain abyss

Plain?

.11 to .13 - last versions before major changes to summoning

What were they, while we're at it? :P

For reference, I've been playing since .8, I just haven't paid super close attention to the details of all the changes, would love if someone could help me understand all of this.

aptitudes used to be "X%" instead of "+Y", HG is wrong about cleaving, vaults 1-7 used to be just D:17-27 except with a different layout, abyss used to be one level and didn't have its own monsters, and summons used to attack out of LoS and not have a summons cap

Vaults: 1-7 had vault guards too I think.

cleaving was always innate, whereas reaching used to be a brand that whips and polearms could have, and 0.9 was the last version that had neither innate reaching nor innate cleaving, making it the last version where weapon categories were differentiated only by various weapon stats, including stabbing bonuses and restricted brands, and not special effects

Cleaving was added in .12.

Its an honest mistake, its hard to imagine the game now without cleaving for me too.

Then again, I can't imagine the game with circular LoS either and that was a recent change.

Recent favourite: making Orc 2 levels deep
Recent least favourite: making Jiyva altars rarer
All-time favourite: Making (almost) all backgrounds available for (almost) all species
