Where do all of the names in this game come from?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Where do all of the names in this game come from?

Maud is obviously from nethack (though that raises another question).
Mara is a demon in Buddhist mythology.
Dowan and Duvessa appear to be named after two influential devs here (but where did they get their names from!?).

For gods, Trog seems to be a very straightforward, in-your-face, not-very-intellectual name. Fitting.
Zin and Xom really feel like they embody the true spirits of the gods they represent, with Zin wanting to keep the player pure and Xom just sounding like a court jester.
Dithmenos kinda sounds like Darkness, so it has that association in the player's mind.
Sif Muna has an air of mystery to it.
Vehumet just screams god of destruction.
Kikubaaqudgha with his near-unpronounceable ominous name fits perfectly as the magical demon-god.

The mage names (Ozocubu, Iskenderun, etc.) seem to be completely random.

If you talk and act like you own the place and nobody says otherwise, it's easy to convince people that you do.

you have causation mixed up. cheibrodos and duvessa and dowan named themselves after the game things; not vice versa.

The people named after things in the game are like the "nenels" of the crawl community. I know im gonna get a lot of hate once they figure what it means.

No, my friend, it is you who has mixed up causation.

Here's what happened:
Long, long ago, I won control of the realm of squishy elven mages, sweet sausages, and spoiled wine from a disgraced demi-god in an incomprehensible contest that mortal minds cannot grasp (it was a lot like a game of connect four)
I used this control to create the concept of Dowan in the thought-verse, that is to say, I created the concept, but it wasn't attached to any physical thing, it was just an idea floating in the universe. Also I created sweet italian sausage in much the same way, for what I assume are obvious reasons.

Much later, while, I assume, eating a sweet italian sausage, someone came up with the idea of Dowan the character in Dungeon Crawl. Probably Linley himself.

So, greatly amused, I took the name on for myself in the online forum for dungeon crawl.

I also accidentally created Duvessa, but that's a story for another day. Suffice it to say that was more related to spoiled wine than sweet sausages.

Nenel: a word you use when you can’t find any words to describe something.

That's all I could come up with from a brief google search. I have to assume you have a different meaning in mind.

Nenel is that crazy hobo who appears to live in a different universe and always passes by the street of either where you work or where you live at talking to himself and screaming at others some nonsense that you cannot help but laugh about.
