Because if you die in early game you lose minutes of your time, but if you die in late game you lose hours.

because it sets new players up with the expectation that dcss is 'unwinnably hard,' thereby giving the game an exaggerated sense of 'depth' and mystique

In the circus animals fork this is a major motivator for changes. There are already many changes in place that make early game easier, and late game harder.
