The value of regeneration

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Re: The value of regeneration

If you assume you get hit by exactly one attack every 10 AUT and you are always below max hp, an item of regen is worth 4/5ths of a point of AC. The advantage of Regen over AC is that it gives you that defensive benefit even over time where you aren't being attacked as long as you're still injured. The advantage of AC over Regen is that it applies whether or not you're injured, and it applies to every attack* that happens to you regardless of timing.

Re: The value of regeneration

Since items give 40 regen, and the the spell gives 100 regen, is it fair to extend this to saying that the spell is like 4/5 * 100/40 = 2 AC? The mutation would 2/5 AC per level (Tr 2, VS 1-3).

Well theres also the benefit of much less piety decay (hugely noticeable on trog/oka) and of less random encounters while at low HP.

What about say compared to Spirit Shield? The other day I had a choice between Amulet of Vitality and Spirit shield amulet...

Re: The value of regeneration

Regen items are worth far more than .8 AC

The advantage of Regen over AC is that it gives you that defensive benefit even over time where you aren't being attacked as long as you're still injured.

Most of the time an extra point of AC isn't used, because you aren't fighting, or you dodged the attack, or you rolled much higher than damage, or the attack ignores AC entirely.

Rough estimate, I would value the first Regen item (40 regen) at more like 4-5 AC.

Re: The value of regeneration

4 AC generally reduces the damage you take by more than 0.04 of a hit point per aut.

Spirit shield essensialy increase your max HP by your MP if you are not casting spells/using MP based god abilities. I would go vitality because it give +15 HP as well as the regen.

If it's that easy, I'll go with the Amulet of Double Vitality (Regen++, HP+30)!

Re: The value of regeneration

no, he said per aut and minmay sticks to 10 minmayaut = 1.0 "turn"

of course since aut is "arbitrary", other people probably use different auts

(notably, you actually used the same aut as minmay, so I'm not sure why you are confused, you even have exactly the same math)

If that was an item, I would use it every game I found it.

Re: The value of regeneration

You're right, I read his "aut" as "turn" -- this is what I get for posting when I'm exhausted. Sorry, duvessa.
