Sil for crawl Players

I've been playing a lot of Sil recently; specifically mpa-sil. It's dope and I highly recommend it.

Some dungeon crawling questions about it:

- What does good combat ground look like? Monsters are wise to the hide in a corridor tactic and will only enter them reluctantly, or after they've sent someone around to surround you. While you can trick them in, the risk of getting surrounded is still higher, so a plain corridor won't do well. I've figured out a few things, but when and where to retreat has gotten me killed quite a few times.

- How important are elemental resists? In crawl, with the exception of a few areas, the trade of two points of AC for a pip of rF is debated in usefulness in crawl. In Sil having rF reduces the number of damage die of flame melee attacks, which later on saves you 1d10 or more. It seems like a bigger swing.

- How dangerous is the Feanorian brand? In crawl if you're strong OOD monsters don't bother you too much. In Sil it seems like (the few turns I tried it) suicide at the 500ft level, but at 900ft probably not a big deal and worth the trade off.

- How do you manage as a stealthy pacifist or opportunist? Whenever I get noticed it quickly turns into a I'm surrounded and dead situation. Crawl no longer has pacifists, but stabbers tend to rely on the "teleport out of bad situations" technique, which is not available in Sil.

- How useful is smithing as a secondary skill? I've run a Feanor which took two points to guarantee getting an ok sword but those 300xp seem like they could be better spent elsewhere; good swords turn up soon enough. I've also run the Fingolfin below which was a Jeweler from the start; this seemed way more useful (Accuracy and Evasion rings at the beginning, and after finding either an enchanted forge or gauntlets of the forge a +0 Amulet of the Blessed Realm. Later on after finding mithril, some Feanorian lamps.) How much could one get out of weaponsmith with 4 smithing points at the start as a Feanor instead of a Fingolfin?

And a chardump from my most recent run two-shotted by an Ururauko for general commentary.

"In crawl, with the exception of a few areas, the trade of two points of AC for a pip of rF is debated in usefulness in crawl."
When the difference is between 0 and 1 rF, the usefulness is not debated. You use rF when fighting fire damaging monsters. It's the same in Sil.

Re: Sil for crawl Players

-1 rank of each resist as a swappable is good for most enemies. 2 ranks of resist is ideal if you are fighting great fire drakes.
-Feanorian brand is dangerous most of the game, but not too dangerous by the time you get to 900-950'.
-Smithing is mediocre unless you're doing an archer, then take 2 points for weaponsmith. I wouldn't put a lot of XP into it unless I was doing a dedicated smithing char, which is kind of hard.

Looking at your char, don't bother hyrbidizing into archery.
Ururauko are pretty dangerous if you don't have rF.

But is it fun and good? I guess I could try it and determine that for myself

Re: Sil for crawl Players

I find it to be a lot of fun. For me at least the tension is higher than in crawl and the enemies scarier.

The game is balanced around not being able to translocate, so it's the challenge of Fo without the suffering.
