Radar shooting doesn't bother you the same way search-walking does, tabstorm, or do you play that one melee-only challenge in DoomRL?

Re: Tier List: Roguelike

How do you decide when to radar shoot in DoomRL? Do you literally shoot every time you take a step?

Re: Tier List: Roguelike

I'm not an expert on it, but monsters make noises (yes, sound is kind of important in DoomRL, and you get a message when you kill all the monsters on the level, and you hear a pain sound when you hit a monster even if you don't see it, and your projectiles will move beyond the fog of war until they hit an enemy or a wall, and a shotgun fires a lot of projectiles and ammo is plentiful, so, you can abuse that.

Edit: I guess you asked when to do it, not how it works, so this post is kind of pointless.

Re: Tier List: Roguelike

Brogue has traps that are both prominent and dangerous. There's also a search function - you press 's' and there's a ~chance~ you'll reveal traps and hidden doors nearby. Latest version also have auto-searching, however it is less effective than regular searching. There's also ring of awareness, which is a ring that improves your auto-searching capabilities to a degree that depends on its enchantment. You don't really need search-walking on upper levels, but later traps become more common and you lose much more by triggering them, so it is somewhat optimal. You can't search forever though, since lost turns = lost food.

It should also be said that you use traps you've found offensively: sometimes, throwing a dart at a trap can kill monsters much better than your weapon or your staff.

Re: Tier List: Roguelike

I don't care about radar shooting that much for whatever reason. At least you're engaging with enemies in some way rather than hoping you don't stumble onto a trap. I have a deep hatred of floor traps. I mean, I'm not that opposed to certain tedious things, since most of my DCSS gameplay is spent startscumming on D:1 - Lair for statue form, chei, and +/*tele. But the tedious stuff should at least have some payoff, and Brogue dosen't. There's tons of other bad mechanics in the game aside from traps, too.

Re: Tier List: Roguelike

It also could be noted wrt Brogue traps that one of the "builds" the game can hand to you is the "ally" build (which is arguably the strongest one even after multiple nerfs), and allies will happily walk into traps, and if those are confusion traps they will continue walking after being confused and will possibly trigger those traps again and again and again. I call it "confusion dance".
