The thing with *Rage is that it can actually be a good thing since sometimes berserking just helps. You simply need to identify the situations where *Rage can kill you and be more careful in these situations (basically: "fighting several monsters at very low HP"). Further, if berserking triggers at an inappropriate point, you can just run away - for a few turns you'll be hasted, then if you still haven't reached a staircase before berserk expired, you can teleport if necessary.
Random berserking gets more deadly later on, when there are more monsters that aren't just speed 10 melee dudes: phantasmal warriors blinking behind you, summoners, ranged packs...

It looks like everyone missed that we are talking about Fire Elementalist...
Teleporting away is not a good idea, you can land in a dangerous spot and you will still be slowed and unable to run away.
Edit. It looks like I should stop arguing at this point. If players need +10 rapier with *Rage as FE or Robust 2 to reliably win, they should just get good and stop mutation scamming with character quitting if getting teleportitis, berserkitis and frail.

You do realize that Fire Elementalists are allowed to become melee fighters, or Fighters are allowed to become blaster casters, if one thinks this is a good idea in a given set of circumstances?

Do you see huge difference? I don't. I am not going to become a melee fighter with dagger of electro when I started as GrFE.
And that *Rage means I cannot use it to save MP because 1% berserk still can kill.

Sorry, if I seemed harsh. I meant I have less chance to win with that *Rage because I have higher chance to die with it than without it. For other players it can be the other way around so there is no point in arguing. Similar thing happens with mutation roulette.

If you aren't using it at absolutely stupid times you will not have higher chance to die with it... just lure enemies back a bit closer to stairs and then retreat once rage is over if it procs.

I honestly don't see how it can help me. If I use it in hard situation, it can kill me. If I use it in easy situation, another weapon will be better because it does not have that 1% chance to cause me problems. Of course I will not drop it on the ground, it is possible to get into situation when you are cornered and must fight, berserk or not. I even might train some SBl for it just for those situations.

This game has been very stingy with good items, so this was a delight for ~150g in a bazaar. Was a real struggle to get to as well, getting swarmed with relatively close stairs on U:5. Worth it though!

Also +Rage is not that great, you need to spend a whole turn to evoke it. *Rage is much better, it gives Rage without wasting turns

Didn't find them until Vault:5 and Tomb:3 so the game was just about over and Mu aptitudes don't allow for much adjustments. Briefly considered a switch to Ash to transfer skills though.

Well, normally I would say yes but with Xom I really like axes and that war axe is not bad, Str+8 increases both damage and EV and you already have 10 levels in axe. So do whatever, you already have Zot 5-like defenses including resistances
